Risers, Impacts and Downlifters in Serum 2

Transition FX are the least glamorous sounds in a track and the ones you use in every single arrangement. A riser into the drop, an impact on the downbeat, a downlifter easing out of it. Serum 2 makes all three from noise, pitch envelopes and not much else.

Build them once, save them as presets, and you never open a “cinematic FX” sample pack at 2 a.m. again. Here’s my working set.

The basic riser

  1. Init a patch. Turn on the noise oscillator, white noise, and turn the main oscillator off for now.
  2. Add a highpass filter and assign a slow envelope or LFO to sweep the cutoff up from around 200 Hz to 8 kHz.
  3. Set the amp envelope attack long, several seconds, so the sound fades in as it rises.
  4. Stretch the sweep to your transition length. For a 2-bar riser at 128 BPM that’s about 3.75 seconds, a 4-bar riser is 7.5.

That’s the workhorse. Two upgrades that make it sound intentional instead of default:

  • Add a saw oscillator underneath the noise and route a pitch envelope to it, rising one octave over the same length. Tonal risers pull harder than pure noise.
  • Automate reverb mix upward through the riser. The sound getting wetter as it climbs reads as “something is about to happen” even at low volume.

Pitch envelopes do the heavy lifting

Here’s the non-obvious part: the emotional shape of a transition is almost entirely the pitch curve, not the volume. A riser with a slow exponential pitch curve, most of the movement crammed into the last bar, creates way more tension than a straight line over four bars. Draw the curve so it’s lazy at the start and steep at the end.

Same logic inverted for downlifters. Fast drop at the start, then a long lazy tail. Symmetric curves sound like stock sounds because that’s what stock sounds use.

Downlifters and sub drops

A downlifter is a riser played backwards, conceptually: white noise with the filter sweeping down, pitch falling, reverb drying out. It answers the drop instead of announcing it. Keep them quieter than you think, around 6–10 dB under your risers. Their job is to fill the exit, not to be noticed.

The sub drop is even simpler and more effective:

  1. One sine oscillator, no filter.
  2. Pitch envelope falling one to two octaves over 1–2 seconds.
  3. Trigger it on the downbeat of the drop, starting around G1–C2.

One warning from experience: check it in mono and on small speakers. A sub drop that dives below 30 Hz is just a woofer massage nobody hears. I stop mine around 35–40 Hz.

Impacts

Impacts are layered, and synthesis covers two of the three layers. Low boom: a sine with a fast pitch envelope falling an octave in 100–200 ms, basically a giant kick. Noise splash: white noise burst with a fast decay and a big reverb. The third layer, some kind of textured hit or found-sound clank, is honestly easier to take from a recording than to synthesize. I don’t fight that; not everything needs to come from a synth.

Build the FX folder once

The actual productivity trick isn’t any single patch. It’s that Serum 2 saves user presets under Presets/User, and you can make an “FX” folder there with Riser 2bar, Riser 4bar, Downlifter, Sub Drop, Impact Boom. Ten minutes of setup, and every future track skips the sample-pack scroll entirely. Commercial packs install into that same folder tree, so anything you pick up from the full list of Serum 2 packs can be reorganized the same way.

Two habits that make the folder actually useful:

  • Name patches by length and bars, not vibes. “Riser 4bar dark” beats “Skyfall Tension VII” when you’re browsing mid-session.
  • Map one macro to “intensity” in each patch, controlling filter range, reverb mix and drive together. One knob to scale the same riser from an intro transition to the final drop.

Fitting transitions into a mix

Transitions die in the arrangement more often than in the patch. What I’ve settled on:

  • Highpass every riser around 150–200 Hz. Its low end fights the bassline for nothing.
  • Sidechain risers to the kick lightly so the build keeps the groove pumping instead of smearing over it.
  • Cut the riser dead an instant before the drop. The half-beat of silence hits harder than any impact sample. This one took me embarrassingly long to learn.

How long should a riser be?

Match it to the phrase: 2 or 4 bars in most dance music. Calculate the seconds from your BPM and set the envelope to that length instead of guessing.

Why do my risers sound like stock samples?

Straight-line pitch and volume curves. Make the curves exponential, slow start and steep finish, and automate reverb mix upward through the build.

What note should a sub drop start on?

Around G1–C2, falling one to two octaves. Stop the fall around 35–40 Hz or small speakers hear nothing at all.

Do I need transition FX in every track?

Mostly yes in dance genres, but quieter than you think. If a listener notices the riser as a sound, it’s probably too loud.

None of this is glamorous work. But an afternoon spent building five FX presets pays back in every track you finish after it, and that’s a better trade than most sound design offers.
