Serum 2 Effects: Routing, Buses & the New FX Explained

The serum 2 effects section used to be one straight line. In Serum 1, every sound in your patch ran through the same chain, in the same order, no exceptions. If you wanted a clean sub under a distorted top layer, you needed two plugin instances and a bus in your DAW.

Serum 2 fixed that. You get multiple FX buses, per-effect modulation, and a handful of new modules that are actually useful, not filler. I’ve built every Monosounds pack since the Serum 2 release on this system, so I’ve had over a year to break it and fix it.

This guide covers the routing, the new effects, and the chain orders I keep coming back to for bass, pads, and leads.

FX Buses: The Biggest Change From Serum 1

In Serum 1 you got one rack. Ten slots, one order, everything shared it. Serum 2 gives you multiple FX buses, and each oscillator can be sent to whichever bus you want.

That sounds like a small feature. It isn’t. It means one patch can hold a complete layered sound where each layer gets its own processing.

Here’s a real routing from a drum and bass patch I shipped last year:

  • Osc A: sine wave, pitched -12. Routed to Bus 1. The only thing on that bus is an EQ rolling off everything above 200 Hz.
  • Osc B: a wavetable with heavy warp movement. Routed to Bus 2, which runs Distortion in Overdrive mode, a flanger, and a short reverb at about 15% mix.

The sub never touches the distortion. The top layer can get as filthy as it wants. In Serum 1 this exact sound took two instances and twenty minutes of DAW routing. Now it’s two clicks in the oscillator output settings.

If you build bass music, this alone justifies the update. It’s the workflow behind most patches in our Epic Tones drum and bass preset pack, and it’s why those patches sit in a mix without extra plugins.

The New Serum 2 Effects Worth Your Time

Serum 2 kept the old modules and added new ones. Three additions matter more than the rest.

Bode Frequency Shifter

A frequency shifter is not a pitch shifter. Pitch shifting multiplies every harmonic, so the sound stays harmonic. The Bode shifter adds a fixed number of Hz to every partial instead, which breaks the harmonic series and makes things metallic and strange.

Two ways I use it. Small values, around +1 to +3 Hz with mix at 30-50%, give you a slow phasing motion that’s great on plucks and pads. Big values, +200 Hz and up at full mix, turn a plain saw into a bell or an alarm. It’s become my first stop for neuro bass texture.

Three New Reverb Types

Serum 2 ships three new reverb algorithms alongside the original. They range from tight and roomy to long and diffuse, and they sound different enough that picking the right one matters.

My honest advice: don’t read about them, audition them. Load the same pad, hold one chord, and flip through the types with size and mix fixed. You’ll hear the differences in ten seconds. I reach for the tighter types on basses and keys, and save the long diffuse one for pads and atmospheres.

One habit worth stealing: keep reverb mix lower than feels right in solo. On a pad I rarely go past 35%, on a bass almost never past 15%. Serum’s reverbs sound big, and big is exactly what buries a mix.

Overdrive Distortion Mode

The Distortion module got an Overdrive mode, and it’s softer than the old hard clip and tube curves. It compresses into saturation instead of slamming into a ceiling.

That makes it the mode I use first on almost everything now. Drive at 25-40% adds weight without fizz. The older modes still win when you want aggression, but Overdrive is the one that survives a full mix.

Per-Effect Modulation

In Serum 1, FX parameters were mostly static. In Serum 2 you can drag any mod source onto almost any effect parameter, same as you’d modulate cutoff.

Some combinations I use constantly: an LFO synced to 1/4 pulling reverb mix down on each beat, which fakes sidechain on the tail only. An envelope pushing distortion drive so the attack bites harder than the sustain. A macro sweeping delay feedback for build-ups.

This turns static serum 2 effects into part of the sound design, not a coat of paint at the end. If modulation routing in general is still fuzzy for you, I cover the whole system in my Serum 2 modulation guide.

Effect Order: Chains for Bass, Pads, and Leads

Order matters more than settings. The big one is distortion versus filter.

Distortion before the filter: the filter tames the new harmonics, so you get smooth, controlled grit. This is the classic acid and neuro move. Distortion after the filter: every resonant peak gets exaggerated, so it’s louder, harsher, more aggressive. Neither is wrong. They’re two different sounds, and I covered why in my Serum 2 filters guide.

A few more rules I follow. EQ right after distortion, because saturation always piles up energy around 3-5 kHz. Compression before reverb, so you’re not pumping the tail. Delay before reverb, so the echoes stay readable inside the wash.

Here are the chains I default to:

FX Order Rules I Actually Use

Watch the CPU

Multiple buses mean multiple reverbs, and reverbs aren’t free. A patch with two long reverbs, a Bode shifter, and unison 16 will eat a core on older machines. I learned this the hard way while finishing a pack on a 2019 laptop: one patch hit 40% of a core until I merged the reverbs.

Quick fixes: keep unison at 3-7, use one shared long reverb instead of two, and drop oversampling to 2x while writing. I keep a full checklist in my Serum 2 CPU optimization guide, including the Serum.cfg tweaks for GPU glitches.

Serum 2 Effects FAQ

Can each oscillator go to a different FX bus?

Yes. That’s the point of the bus system. Set the oscillator’s output routing to the bus you want. The most common split is sub on a clean bus and everything else on a processed bus.

What is the Bode frequency shifter actually good for?

Metallic textures, slow pseudo-phasing, and making bass movement that a normal phaser can’t do. Start at +2 Hz, 40% mix, and go from there. It shifts frequencies linearly, so it’s a different animal from pitch shifting.

Should distortion go before or after the filter?

Before, if you want smooth and controlled, since the filter cleans up the added harmonics. After, if you want the resonance to scream. Try both on the same patch once and you’ll never have to ask again.

Do Serum 1 presets keep their effects in Serum 2?

Yes. Serum 1 presets load with their FX chain intact on a single bus, exactly as they were saved. You can then move effects onto other buses and use the new serum 2 effects on top.

The FX section is where Serum 2 pulls furthest ahead of Serum 1. Buses for layering, modulation on every knob, and a few genuinely new modules. Learn the routing first, the individual effects second.
