Serum 2 Effects: Routing, Buses & the New FX Explained

The serum 2 effects section was once a single straight line. Serum 1 forced every sound in a patch through one chain, one order, no way around it. Wanted a clean sub sitting under a distorted top layer? That meant two plugin instances plus bus routing in your DAW.

Serum 2 solved it. There are multiple FX buses now, modulation on individual effect parameters, and several new modules that earn their place instead of padding the list. Every Monosounds pack since the Serum 2 release has been built on this system, which means I’ve spent over a year breaking it and patching it back up.

Below: how the routing works, which new effects matter, and the chain orders I fall back on for bass, pads, and leads.

FX Buses: The Biggest Change From Serum 1

Serum 1 handed you a single rack. Ten slots, fixed order, shared by everything. In Serum 2 there are multiple FX buses, and you point each oscillator at whichever bus you like.

On paper that reads like a minor feature. In practice it means a single patch can carry a fully layered sound, with separate processing per layer.

Real routing from a drum and bass patch I shipped last year:

  • Osc A: sine wave, pitched -12. Sent to Bus 1, where the only processing is an EQ cutting everything above 200 Hz.
  • Osc B: a wavetable with heavy warp movement. Sent to Bus 2, running Distortion in Overdrive mode, a flanger, and a short reverb around 15% mix.

The distortion never sees the sub. Meanwhile the top layer is free to get as filthy as it likes. Getting this exact sound out of Serum 1 took two instances and twenty minutes of DAW plumbing. Here it’s two clicks in the oscillator output settings.

For anyone making bass music, this feature alone is worth the update. It’s the workflow underneath most patches in our Epic Tones drum and bass preset pack, and the reason those patches drop into a mix without needing extra plugins.

The New Serum 2 Effects Worth Your Time

The old modules survived into Serum 2, and new ones arrived. Three of the additions matter more than everything else.

Bode Frequency Shifter

Don’t confuse a frequency shifter with a pitch shifter. Pitch shifting multiplies each harmonic, so the result stays harmonic. The Bode shifter instead adds a fixed Hz amount to every partial, which wrecks the harmonic series and pushes things metallic and weird.

I use it two ways. Small settings, roughly +1 to +3 Hz with the mix at 30-50%, produce a slow phasing drift that flatters plucks and pads. Large settings, +200 Hz and beyond at full mix, take an ordinary saw and turn it into a bell or an alarm. For neuro bass texture it’s become the first thing I reach for.

Three New Reverb Types

Alongside the original algorithm, Serum 2 adds three new reverb types. They run from tight and roomy out to long and diffuse, and the differences are big enough that choosing well actually matters.

Honest advice: skip the reading and audition them. Load one pad, hold a single chord, and cycle the types with size and mix locked. Ten seconds and you’ll hear it. For basses and keys I grab the tighter types; the long diffuse one gets saved for pads and atmospheres.

Steal this habit too: set reverb mix lower than sounds right in solo. Past 35% on a pad is rare for me, and past 15% on a bass almost never happens. Serum’s reverbs are big-sounding, and big is precisely what drowns a mix.

Overdrive Distortion Mode

The Distortion module picked up an Overdrive mode, gentler than the old hard clip and tube curves. Rather than slamming a ceiling, it compresses into saturation.

These days it’s my first-choice mode on nearly everything. At 25-40% drive it adds weight with no fizz. When you need real aggression the older modes still take it, but Overdrive is the mode that holds up inside a full mix.

Per-Effect Modulation

FX parameters in Serum 1 were mostly frozen. Serum 2 lets you drag any mod source onto nearly any effect parameter, exactly like modulating cutoff.

Combinations I lean on constantly: a 1/4-synced LFO ducking reverb mix on every beat, which fakes sidechain on just the tail. An envelope driving distortion amount so the attack bites harder than the sustain. A macro riding delay feedback for build-ups.

Effect Order: Chains for Bass, Pads, and Leads

Settings matter less than order. The big decision is distortion versus filter.

Put distortion ahead of the filter and the filter tames the fresh harmonics: smooth, controlled grit, the classic acid and neuro move. Put it after the filter and every resonant peak gets blown up: louder, harsher, angrier. Both are valid. They’re simply two different sounds, and the reasons are in my Serum 2 filters guide.

Some other rules I stick to. EQ straight after distortion, since saturation always dumps energy into the 3-5 kHz zone. Compression ahead of reverb so the tail isn’t pumping. Delay ahead of reverb so the echoes stay legible inside the wash.

My default chains:

FX Order Rules I Actually Use

Watch the CPU

More buses means more reverbs, and reverbs cost real cycles. Stack two long reverbs, a Bode shifter, and unison 16 in one patch and an older machine loses a core. I found out the hard way finishing a pack on a 2019 laptop: a single patch was eating 40% of a core until I merged its reverbs.

Fast fixes: unison at 3-7, one shared long reverb instead of two, oversampling down to 2x while you write. The complete checklist is in my Serum 2 CPU optimization guide, Serum.cfg tweaks for GPU glitches included.

Serum 2 Effects FAQ

Can each oscillator go to a different FX bus?

Yes, that’s the whole point of the bus system. Point the oscillator’s output routing at whichever bus you want. The classic split puts the sub on a clean bus and everything else on a processed one.

What is the Bode frequency shifter actually good for?

Metallic textures, slow pseudo-phasing, and a kind of bass movement no ordinary phaser produces. Begin at +2 Hz with 40% mix and adjust from there. Because the shift is linear across frequencies, it behaves nothing like pitch shifting.

Should distortion go before or after the filter?

Before, when you want things smooth and controlled, because the filter mops up the added harmonics. After, when you want the resonance screaming. Run both on the same patch once and the question answers itself forever.

Do Serum 1 presets keep their effects in Serum 2?

Yes. A Serum 1 preset loads with its FX chain intact on a single bus, exactly as saved. From there you can spread effects across other buses and stack the new serum 2 effects on top.
