The patches people send us mostly fail the same way. Wavetable’s fine, filter’s fine, and nothing is moving. Serum 2 modulation is the line between a frozen sawtooth and a sound with a pulse, and having built preset packs since 2022 I’d put it at 80% of the job.
Serum 2 held onto the drag-and-drop routing the original was famous for, then stacked more of everything on top. Ten LFOs, four envelopes that sync to BPM, chaos and path LFO modes, modulation inside the effects.
Below I’ll explain how the routing actually works, then build three real patches with concrete settings: a wobble bass, a pad that evolves on its own, and filter movement that reacts to how you play. Plus the one mistake that kills more demo patches than any other.
How Serum 2 Modulation Actually Works
It all begins with a drag. Take the little handle beside LFO 1’s name and drop it onto the filter cutoff knob. A ring shows up around the knob; pull that ring to decide how far the modulation reaches. For 90% of routings, that’s the whole workflow.
Every connection you make lands in the Mod Matrix. Click the Matrix tab and each routing appears as a row with source, amount, destination. The finer controls live there.
- Bipolar or unipolar: unipolar shoves the value one way only, bipolar swings it both directions around where the knob sits. Vibrato wants bipolar. A filter sweep is usually a unipolar job.
- Curve: reshapes the response, so modulation can ease in softly or hit hard and fast.
- Aux source: a second source that scales the first one. The textbook example is velocity deciding how far an envelope opens the filter.

Four Envelopes, All BPM-Syncable
You get four envelopes now instead of three. Env 1 belongs to the amp, permanently. Env 2, 3 and 4 are yours for anything else. Honestly, half the Serum 2 modulation questions in my inbox turn out to be envelope questions wearing a disguise.
BPM sync is the upgrade that rewired my workflow. Give Env 2 a decay of a 1/4 note instead of some millisecond value and the filter pluck sits in the pocket whether the project runs at 124 BPM or 174 BPM. Nothing to retune per session.
My go-to pluck routing: Env 2, attack 0, decay synced to 1/4, sustain 0, release short. Drop it on cutoff around 60%. Then add velocity as the aux source at 40%, so quiet notes stay dark. That’s two routings and the patch is already behaving like an instrument.
The New LFO Modes (and the Three Old Ones)
Up to 10 LFOs run inside the Serum 2 modulation system, and each keeps the three trigger modes from Serum 1. Trig restarts the shape with every note. Env fires the shape once, like an envelope you drew yourself. Off lets it free-run against the project clock, which is lovely on pads since every chord lands on a different point of the movement.
The fresh additions are where the fun starts:
- Chaos modes: Lorenz and Rossler attractors produce motion that never loops yet still feels musical. I like a slow chaos LFO at low amounts on wavetable position for that analog-style drift.
- Path mode: draw a 2D path and one LFO hands you separate X and Y outputs. Send X to cutoff and Y to pan, and a single shape animates both parameters in lockstep.
- Faster rates: LFOs now climb to 1 kHz, so pointing one at pitch or level tips you into FM and AM territory. Strange sounds, genuinely handy for metallic textures.
Sensible starting rates: 1/4 for house wobbles, 1/8 or 1/16 for dubstep and DnB, 2 bars or longer for pads. Switch grid snap on before drawing rhythmic shapes. The X and Y grids are now independent, and odd gate patterns get much quicker to draw because of it.
Macros: The Performance Layer
The four macro knobs generate no sound at all. Their job is aggregation. A single macro can push five destinations at five different depths, so you can wire one intensity knob for the entire patch.
My usual lead setup: Macro 1 raises cutoff +35%, wavetable position +20%, reverb mix +15%. Automate that single knob in the DAW and you’ve written a whole buildup. It’s also the first control I map to hardware before a live set.
Before any pack of ours ships, every patch gets four labeled macros. That step is what separates a preset someone auditions once from a preset someone keeps reaching for.
Three Patches Worth Stealing
1. The Wobble Bass (140 BPM)
Osc A: pick a growly wavetable, unison 3, detune 0.10. Filter: low pass, cutoff near 250 Hz. LFO 1: Trig mode, synced 1/4, rounded triangle.
Send LFO 1 to cutoff around 65% and to wavetable position at 40%, so the timbre snarls while the filter opens. During fills, automate the LFO rate from 1/4 down to 1/16. That single rate ride covers most of the dubstep vocabulary in one automation lane.

2. The Evolving Pad
A static pad dies in a mix. Movement is the cure. Put Osc A on a wavetable and Osc B on the Granular engine with slow grains, then add three slow modulators that refuse to line up:
- LFO 3 in Off mode at a 2-bar rate, hitting Osc A wavetable position at 30%.
- A chaos LFO, crawling, at 10% on grain position.
- Env 4 with a 2-second attack that opens the filter on each chord.
The free-running LFO and the chaos LFO drift at unrelated speeds, so the pad never lands on the same combination twice. That stack of slow modulators is the spine of most pads in our Elixir Serum preset pack.
3. Filter Movement That Follows Your Playing
This one converts a preset into an instrument. Env 2 to cutoff at 55%. Velocity as aux source at 50%, so hard playing opens the filter and gentle playing keeps things mellow. Then route note keytracking to cutoff around 30%, so high notes hold their brightness instead of choking.

The Classic Mistake: Modulating Everything at Once
Nearly every rough patch I audition for our packs breaks in the same spot. Fifteen routings, all cranked, all arguing with each other. The sound wobbles and drifts and pumps and shimmers simultaneously, and nothing about it reads as a decision.
My rule: one hero movement, one supporting movement, everything else below 10%. The hero is what you’d name the patch after. The wobble, the sweep, the swell. The support backs it up. Everything else is seasoning.
Worthwhile exercise: load a few patches from our free 250+ Serum 2 preset pack and count the matrix rows. Our best sellers mostly run four to six routings, nowhere near twenty. Restraint pays far better dividends in Serum 2 modulation than complexity does.
Serum 2 Modulation FAQ
How do I remove a modulation in Serum 2?
Go to the Matrix tab, find the row, delete it. Or pull the depth ring around the destination knob back down to zero. When several sources are stacked on one knob, the matrix view is the safer route, since it shows you exactly which routing you’re about to kill.
Can Serum 2 LFOs and envelopes sync to my project BPM?
Both can, yes. LFO rates snap to note values, and envelope stages sync to tempo as well. The complete modulation spec is listed on the official Serum 2 page from Xfer.
What’s the difference between LFO Env mode and a real envelope?
Env mode fires your drawn LFO shape once per note, which makes it a custom envelope with as many stages as you can draw. For velocity-scaled ADSR duty, the four proper envelopes still win. For complicated one-shot gestures, Env-mode LFOs take it.
Do Serum 1 presets keep their modulation in Serum 2?
They do. Serum 1 presets arrive with routings intact, and Serum 2 is a free upgrade for Serum 1 owners. Old patches make surprisingly good study material: load one, open the matrix, see what makes it tick.
