Most patches people send us have the same problem. The wavetable is fine, the filter is fine, but nothing moves. Serum 2 modulation is what separates a static sawtooth from a sound that feels alive, and after making preset packs since 2022 I can tell you it’s 80% of the job.
Serum 2 kept the drag-and-drop routing that made the original famous, then piled on more of everything. Ten LFOs, four BPM-syncable envelopes, chaos and path LFO modes, per-effect modulation.
In this guide I’ll walk through how the routing works, then build three real patches with exact settings: a wobble bass, an evolving pad, and filter movement that responds to your playing. And I’ll cover the mistake that ruins more demo patches than anything else.
How Serum 2 Modulation Actually Works
Everything starts with a drag. Grab the small handle next to LFO 1’s name and drop it on the filter cutoff knob. A ring appears around the knob. Drag that ring to set how deep the modulation goes. That’s the entire workflow for 90% of routings.
Behind every connection sits the Mod Matrix. Open the Matrix tab and each routing shows up as a row: source, amount, destination. This is where the finer controls live.
- Bipolar or unipolar: unipolar pushes the value in one direction, bipolar swings it both ways around the knob position. Vibrato wants bipolar. A filter sweep usually wants unipolar.
- Curve: bends the response so the modulation eases in gently or slams in fast.
- Aux source: lets a second source scale the first. Velocity controlling how much an envelope opens the filter is the classic use.

Four Envelopes, All BPM-Syncable
Serum 2 gives you four envelopes instead of three. Env 1 is hardwired to the amp. Env 2, 3 and 4 are free for anything. And half the Serum 2 modulation questions I get are really envelope questions in disguise.
The upgrade that changed my workflow is BPM sync. Set Env 2’s decay to a 1/4 note instead of milliseconds and your filter pluck lands in the pocket at 124 BPM and at 174 BPM. No retuning per project.
My default pluck routing: Env 2 with attack 0, decay synced to 1/4, sustain 0, short release. Drop it on cutoff at around 60%. Add velocity as the aux source at 40% so soft notes stay dark. Two routings, and the patch already responds like an instrument.
The New LFO Modes (and the Three Old Ones)
The Serum 2 modulation system runs up to 10 LFOs, and each one still has the three trigger modes from Serum 1. Trig restarts the shape on every note. Env plays the shape once, like a custom-drawn envelope. Off lets it free-run against the project clock, which is great on pads because every chord catches the movement at a different point.
The new stuff is where it gets fun:
- Chaos modes: Lorenz and Rossler attractors generate movement that never repeats but still feels musical. I run a slow chaos LFO at low amounts on wavetable position for analog-style drift.
- Path mode: draw a 2D path and get separate X and Y outputs from one LFO. Route X to cutoff and Y to pan, and one shape animates two parameters in sync.
- Faster rates: LFOs now reach up to 1 kHz, so an LFO on pitch or level crosses into FM and AM territory. Weird, but useful for metallic textures.
Practical starting rates: 1/4 for house wobbles, 1/8 or 1/16 for dubstep and DnB, 2 bars or slower for pads. Turn on grid snap when drawing rhythmic shapes. The X and Y grids are independent now, which makes odd gate patterns much faster to draw.
Macros: The Performance Layer
The four macro knobs don’t make any sound. They aggregate. One macro can drive five destinations at different depths, which means you can build a single intensity knob for a whole patch.
My standard lead setup: Macro 1 pushes cutoff +35%, wavetable position +20%, and reverb mix +15%. Automating that one knob in the DAW writes an entire buildup. It’s also the first thing I map to a MIDI controller for live sets.
When we ship a pack, every patch gets four labeled macros before it goes out the door. That’s the difference between a preset someone auditions once and a preset someone keeps.
Three Patches Worth Stealing
1. The Wobble Bass (140 BPM)
Osc A: a growly wavetable, unison 3, detune 0.10. Filter: low pass, cutoff around 250 Hz. LFO 1: Trig mode, synced to 1/4, a rounded triangle shape.
Route LFO 1 to cutoff at about 65% and to wavetable position at 40% so the timbre snarls as the filter opens. For fills, automate the LFO rate from 1/4 down to 1/16. That rate ride is basically the whole dubstep vocabulary in one automation lane.

2. The Evolving Pad
Static pads die in a mix. Movement fixes them. Osc A on a wavetable, Osc B on the Granular engine with slow grains. Then three slow modulators that never line up:
- LFO 3 in Off mode, 2-bar rate, to Osc A wavetable position at 30%.
- A chaos LFO, very slow, at 10% on grain position.
- Env 4 with a 2-second attack opening the filter on every chord.
Because the free-running LFO and the chaos LFO drift at unrelated speeds, the pad never repeats itself. That layered slow-modulator trick is the backbone of most pads in our Elixir Serum preset pack.
3. Filter Movement That Follows Your Playing
This one turns a preset into an instrument. Env 2 to cutoff at 55%. Velocity as the aux source at 50%, so hard hits open the filter and soft ones stay mellow. Then note keytracking to cutoff at around 30%, so high notes keep their brightness instead of choking.

The Classic Mistake: Modulating Everything at Once
Almost every rough patch I audition for our packs fails the same way. Fifteen routings, all at high amounts, all fighting. The sound wobbles, drifts, pumps and shimmers at the same time, and none of it reads as intentional.
My rule: one hero movement, one supporting movement, everything else under 10%. The hero is the thing you’d name the patch after. The wobble, the sweep, the swell. The support reinforces it. The rest is seasoning.
A good exercise: open a few patches from our free 250+ Serum 2 preset pack and count the matrix rows. Most of our best sellers use four to six routings, not twenty. Serum 2 modulation rewards restraint far more than complexity.
Serum 2 Modulation FAQ
How do I remove a modulation in Serum 2?
Open the Matrix tab, find the row and delete it. Or drag the depth ring around the destination knob back to zero. The matrix view is safer when a knob has several sources stacked on it, because you can see exactly what you’re removing.
Can Serum 2 LFOs and envelopes sync to my project BPM?
Yes, both. LFO rates snap to note values, and envelope stages can sync to the tempo too. Xfer lists the full modulation spec on the official Serum 2 page.
What’s the difference between LFO Env mode and a real envelope?
Env mode plays your drawn LFO shape once per note, so it works like a custom envelope with as many stages as you can draw. The four real envelopes are still better for velocity-scaled ADSR jobs. Env-mode LFOs win for complex one-shot gestures.
Do Serum 1 presets keep their modulation in Serum 2?
Yes. Serum 1 presets load with routings intact, and Serum 2 is a free upgrade for Serum 1 owners. Old patches are honestly a great study resource: load one, open the matrix, and see how it ticks.
