In most synths, holding a chord gets you nothing. The sound just sits. So you burn twenty minutes hand-drawing MIDI for a single bar of movement, and it often comes out stiff anyway.
The serum 2 arpeggiator solves most of that problem. This isn’t your standard up-down-random toy — think of it as a step sequencer grafted onto the synth, with note, length and velocity available per step. A complete melodic line can be sketched without opening your DAW’s piano roll once.
We at Monosounds have been making Serum preset packs since 2022, and ever since Serum 2 landed in March 2025, the arp is where a frankly ridiculous share of my patch-design hours go. What follows is what that time taught me, with actual settings you can steal.
One Panel, Two Personalities
Serum 2 comes with a built-in arpeggiator and sequencer — something Serum 1 users never got. The upgrade is free for Serum 1 owners too, so staying on the old version makes no sense.
The panel wears two hats. Arp mode cycles through whatever notes you’re holding: up, down, the usual direction choices. Sequencer mode plays back a pattern you build step by step, with each step carrying its own settings.
All of it locks to host tempo. Dial the rate to 1/16 at 126 BPM and each step falls precisely on the grid. That’s the entire pitch: tight timing, zero MIDI editing.

Per-Step Control in the Serum 2 Arpeggiator
Here’s where the serum 2 arpeggiator outgrows being a preset gimmick. Each step in the pattern hands you independent control over four parameters:
- Note – per-step transposition in semitones. Step 1 sounds the held note, step 3 sits at +7, step 5 at +12. You’re composing melodies inside the synth itself.
- Length – how long a step rings before letting go. Short steps leave plucky gaps; long ones bleed into their neighbors.
- Velocity – level per step. This is the groove knob almost everyone ignores, and it matters more than any of the others.
- Direction – the path the pattern takes through your held notes: up, down, plus the variations in between.
Velocity deserves extra attention because it moonlights as a modulation source. Send velocity to filter cutoff in the mod matrix and suddenly quiet steps darken while accented ones snap wide open. My usual starting template: 8 steps at 1/16, steps 1 and 5 at full velocity, the rest hovering near 70 percent. That change alone gives a static pattern lungs.
Using It as a Step Sequencer
The mental flip is this: quit holding chords. Hold one note.
Hold a single C, add per-step note offsets, and the pattern itself becomes your melody. Try 0, +3, +7, +12, +10, +7, +3, 0 at 1/16 — that’s an entire minor arpeggio line, programmed in fifteen seconds. Move the held note and the whole phrase transposes with it. No piano roll edit comes close to that speed.
Rolling basslines for my techno packs get built exactly this way. Single held note, steps at 0, 0, +12, 0, gate near 50 percent, velocity accents landing on the off-steps. The +12 jumps out above the kick, and the tight gate stops the low end from smearing.

Turn a Boring Chord Into a Moving Line
Whenever someone tells me their pads sound dead, this is the five-minute exercise I hand them.
Grab any pluck or pad patch and hold an A minor chord. Switch the arp on: rate 1/16, direction up, range 2 octaves. Better already. Now pull the step length down to roughly 50 percent so the notes get some air between them.
Then comes the step everybody skips: velocity. Take every even step down to around 60 percent and keep 1, 5, 9 and 13 at full. Now the accents sit on the kick and the line grooves instead of machine-gunning at you.
Final move: velocity into filter cutoff, medium depth. Soft steps turn dull, loud steps turn bright. You haven’t changed the chord under your fingers – yet it’s become a moving, breathing line.

Arp Plus Granular: Rhythmic Textures
My current favorite pairing in Serum 2: the serum 2 arpeggiator feeding the granular oscillator engine.
Granular material tends to be washy and formless. The arp hands it a pulse. Each step retriggers the grain cloud, so an evolving texture picks up rhythm while staying a texture.
Here’s the recipe: flip an oscillator to Granular and load any sustained sample – a vocal phrase, a bowed string, a field recording. Run the arp at 1/4 or 1/8, step length close to full so grains smear across step boundaries. Then route per-step velocity to grain position through the mod matrix, and every step pulls audio from a different slice of the sample.
Fair warning: granular is hungry. Serum 2 goes up to 256 grains, and you will almost never want that many. Stay low – 8 to 16 grains covers rhythmic work fine – and pull unison down to around 3 if the patch starts choking.

Getting Ideas Out of the Synth
The arp pattern is stored inside the patch, which is convenient right up until you want to edit the line as actual notes. I handle it two ways.
Option one: recreate it in the piano roll. It sounds like a chore but isn’t – the step grid already shows you every note and length, so copying it over takes two minutes. Worth doing for keepers, since MIDI in the piano roll is far easier to arrange, humanize and share.
Option two: work backwards. Take existing MIDI, drop it onto a track, and let Serum 2’s arp chew through the sustained chords. Serum 2 Arpeggiator FAQ
Does Serum 2 have a built-in arpeggiator?
It does. Both the arpeggiator and step sequencer ship inside Serum 2, released March 2025. Serum 1 never had either – you were stuck with your DAW’s arp or an external MIDI plugin. Since Serum 2 is a free upgrade for Serum 1 owners, the feature literally costs nothing.
Can the Serum 2 arpeggiator work as a step sequencer?
Yes – and frankly that’s the more useful mental model. Hold a single note, program pitch offsets per step, and the pattern is the melody. Add per-step length and velocity and you get gate and groove control no classic arp can match.
Does the arp add CPU load?
The arp on its own costs almost nothing. The bill comes from whatever patch it’s triggering – rapid 1/16 retriggers on a 16-voice unison patch with granular engaged will sting. Bring unison down to 3-7, cap polyphony, and hold oversampling at 2x. If a texture patch still struggles after that, freeze the track and keep moving.
Do Serum 1 presets work with the new arp?
Serum 1 presets open fine in Serum 2, but since they predate the arp, it’ll be switched off by default. Treat that as an opportunity: open an old pluck preset, enable the arp with settings from the table above, and thirty seconds later you own a new patch.
