808s: sub first, then a bit of grit
A Serum 808 is a sine (or a sine with a little triangle) with a short pitch envelope at the start for the punch, a long amp decay, and glide turned on in mono mode so notes can slide. The hard part is making it audible on phone speakers. Add saturation or a light distortion after the oscillator so the 808 gets harmonics in the 100 to 300 Hz range, and keep the pure sub underneath. Tune the 808 to the key of the track, otherwise it fights the kick. I go through this in how to make hard-hitting 808s in Serum 2. Drill: sliding 808s and dark keys
Drill uses the same 808 but plays it differently. The notes slide a lot, often by an octave or more, so the glide time matters more than the sound itself. The melodies are minor-key piano, bell or string patches, kept simple so the bass and the hi-hat rolls carry the rhythm. The Trap & Drill Bundle has drill key presets and sliding 808s along with a drum kit and melody loops. Go2 adds loops and MIDI to its presets.
Trap melodies and lo-fi
Trap melodies in Serum are usually bells, plucks, flutes or dark pads with a fast attack and medium release, so a simple pattern still sounds full. A small amount of detune and a short reverb go a long way. One tip from the free trap pack: write the melody in a minor scale and layer a copy an octave down. Phonk
Phonk is built on three things: a cowbell melody, a distorted 808 or reese bass, and a gritty lead. The cowbell is a short, pitched FM or square patch, the bass is driven hard, and the whole thing usually sits in a dark, saturated mix. House phonk speeds it up with a four-on-the-floor kick. R&B and how to pick a pack
R&B sounds need warmth more than punch: electric pianos, soft pads, round bass with some mid content, and leads that bend like a voice. Keep the attack slow and the high end rolled off.
