RnB drum programming looks easy from the outside. Doing it well takes discipline. The beats that feel effortless are the ones where every velocity value and timing offset is serving the groove.
The Kick and Snare Foundation
The typical RnB pattern puts the kick on beat 1 (occasionally 3) and a snare or clap on 2 and 4. Character comes from ghost notes, velocity variation, and the conversation between kick and bass. Start by programming everything at 60–70% velocity, then push individual hits up from there. RnB drums breathe; they don’t punch.
Two habits worth keeping: slide the snare 10–20 ms late for that laid-back pocket, and never quantize your ghost notes. Play them in (sloppy is fine) and only clean up the genuinely bad ones.
Hi-Hat Programming
This is where RnB and trap part ways. Forget the 32nd-note hat rolls. RnB hats work as 16th notes with deliberate gaps, or as syncopated patterns tracking the vocal phrasing. Hats support the groove here. They never lead it.
808s and Sub Bass
What holds a track together is the relationship between kick, sub bass, and chord roots. Warm, slowly evolving pad sounds have a place in nearly every RnB arrangement. Mix them low: barely there in solo, unmistakable the moment you mute them. Your low end is defined by the kick, 808/bass, and pad triangle. Keep sidechain compression light; RnB low end should feel woven in, never pumping. High-pass anything that doesn’t genuinely need bass energy. Then use multiband compression across 200–500 Hz to tame mud while the warmth survives.
Reverb and Space
RnB leans on reverb harder than most modern genres, but where you put it matters. Long plates and halls belong on vocals and leads. Shorter rooms give drums physical space without washing them away. And put 15–30 ms of pre-delay ahead of the tail; that’s what keeps elements clear and up front even under heavy verb.
Vocal Production
