Chop a dusty sample — that’s the advice in every lo-fi keys tutorial ever made. And it’s fine, right up until you need those chords in another key, or you catch yourself wondering who actually holds the rights to that Rhodes loop. Building your lo-fi keys as Serum 2 patches solves both issues at once, and the whole recipe takes maybe twenty minutes once you’ve done it before.
We’ve been building Serum presets at Monosounds since 2022, and no category gets tweaked less than lo-fi keys. People just play them as-is. Which means the patch alone has to deliver the entire vibe: drifting pitch, vinyl dust, a dark filter, a bit of grit.
Below is the chain I actually use, with concrete numbers you can copy straight in.
Why Build Lo-Fi Serum 2 Keys Instead of Sampling
Three arguments. One: a synth patch follows you to any key and any tempo, and a chopped sample doesn’t. Two: what you build belongs to you, no clearance anxiety. Three: Serum 2 finally ships the engines this sound demands.
All three oscillators can run in Wavetable, Sample, Multisample, Granular, or Spectral mode. So a single preset can hold a piano multisample on Osc A, vinyl crackle loaded into the noise osc, and a granular texture bed on Osc C. None of that was possible in Serum 1. And since the Serum 2 upgrade is free for Serum 1 owners, there’s really no reason to sit it out.
The Wobbly Tape Keys Recipe
The source comes first. Put Osc A in Multisample mode with a soft piano or EP, or reach for a mellow keys wavetable if you’d rather lean synthetic. Go easy on unison: 3 voices, detune near 0.08. Running sixteen unison voices just torches CPU without making anything more lo-fi.
Next, the wobble — this is the entire trick. Tape never holds pitch dead-on, so we counterfeit two kinds of instability:
- Fast flutter: LFO 1, sine, unsynced, somewhere near 0.3 Hz. Drop it on Osc A’s fine pitch at a depth of roughly 10-12 cents. On a lone note it should be barely audible; on a sustained chord it should be unmistakable.
- Slow sag: LFO 2, triangle or smoothed random, around 0.05 Hz, 5-6 cents deep on the same target. That’s the long seasick lean that old cassettes do.
The secret is two LFOs running at different speeds. A single LFO reads as chorus. A pair reads as a tape deck on its last legs.
Dial envelope 1 to a gentle attack (10-20 ms), a medium decay, and a release near 400-600 ms so one chord bleeds softly into the next.
Once the drift is set, this is roughly the neighborhood the keys should land in.
The Vinyl Noise Layer
The noise oscillator in Serum 2 accepts any sample, and the stock library already includes workable crackle and hiss. Load some vinyl crackle, then handle the two things almost everyone misses.
Switch keytracking off. Crackle riding up and down with the keyboard blows the illusion instantly. Real dust stays at one pitch regardless of what you play.
And keep the level down. Roughly -24 dB under the keys does the job. If the crackle is clearly audible in a full mix, it’s too hot. The test: mute it and something feels missing, but nobody points at it while it plays.
Run the noise as a loop instead of a one-shot so sustained chords never lose their dust. This single layer contributes more to a lo-fi Serum 2 patch than anything sitting on the master bus. Want the crackle to breathe? Tie a very slow LFO to its level with a hair of depth.
Low-Pass Filter and Gentle Distortion
Everything lo-fi happens below 4 kHz. Serum 2 introduced 11 analog-style filter types, rounder and softer than the classic digital ones, precisely the character keys want. Choose an analog low-pass, park the cutoff between 2.5 and 3.5 kHz, keep resonance modest at 10-15%, and lean gently on the filter drive.
After that, a little grime in the FX chain. The distortion in Serum 2 has an Overdrive mode that stays musical when used sparingly; hold the mix at 15-20%. Behind it, an EQ trimming a bit off the top, then a short, dark reverb.
One Serum 2 feature earns its keep here: multiple FX buses. Send the keys through the distortion bus while the noise osc rides a clean one. Run crackle through distortion and it becomes fizz. Keep it clean over distorted keys and it becomes a record. Curious what this identical chain sounds like with everything shoved 3x harder? That’s essentially the phonk approach in Serum 2.

Granular Texture Beds
Here’s where Serum 2 leaves every alternative behind. Switch Osc C into Granular mode and feed it something sustained: a held piano chord, a field recording, even a bounce of the very patch you just made. Then make the grains small.
My defaults: grains around 80-150 ms, density kept low so the grains only just overlap, and a lazy LFO on grain position letting the playhead drift across the sample. Sprinkle 5-10 cents of random spray onto grain pitch and the thing stops being a sample and starts being weather.
A sustained loop like this one is exactly the kind of source the bed wants.
Hold this layer 12-18 dB below the keys; it’s a bed, not a lead. Granular processing can chew CPU, so mind the grain count; Serum 2 permits 256 grains and you’ll rarely want more than a fraction of that. Humanize It With Velocity Modulation
Nothing kills a lo-fi Serum 2 patch quicker than a robotic performance — no wrong setting comes close. Open the mod matrix and put velocity to work three times:
- Velocity to filter cutoff, just a little. Quiet notes go darker, loud ones cut through. This one routing turns a static patch into something that feels played.
- Velocity to volume, but shallower than default. Somewhere near 40-50% depth reads as felt-covered hammers rather than an on/off switch.
- Velocity to overdrive amount, barely any. Dig in harder and the sound roughens slightly, exactly how real electromechanical keys respond.
One extra move: route a note-on random source to fine pitch at 3-4 cents. Each keypress arrives a touch differently, like tuning that’s gone soft with age. Then, when programming the MIDI, pull notes a few ticks off the grid. Half the humanizing lives in the patch; the performance supplies the other half.

Lo-Fi Serum 2 Questions I Get Asked
Can I make lo-fi keys in Serum 1?
Halfway. The drift LFOs and the filter work fine in Serum 1. What you give up is the multisample piano engine, the granular texture layer, and separate FX buses for the noise. Given that Serum 1 owners upgrade to Serum 2 for free, working around the old version makes little sense.
Why do my lo-fi Serum 2 patches sound thin?
Nine times out of ten the low-pass is carrying everything. Cutting at 3 kHz removes highs; it adds no body. The fix is filter drive, a small dose of overdrive, and unison 3 with gentle detune. If the mix still reads thin after that, blame the EQ rather than the patch; our EQ blueprint shows where keys belong in the spectrum.
What LFO rate works best for tape wobble?
Flutter lives between 0.2 and 0.5 Hz; the slow sag wants roughly 0.05 Hz. Leave both unsynced. Sync the wobble to tempo and it registers as an effect; let it run free and it registers as hardware.
Do I need a separate vinyl plugin?
Not for the patch. The noise oscillator keeps the crackle inside the preset, so the dust follows the sound anywhere you load it. A dedicated lo-fi plugin on the bus can still smear wow and flutter over the whole mix afterward. Nice to have, not required.
