Every lo-fi keys tutorial tells you to chop a dusty sample. That works until you need the chords in a different key, or you start wondering who actually owns that Rhodes loop. Building lo-fi Serum 2 patches from scratch fixes both problems, and it takes about twenty minutes once you know the recipe.
We’ve been making Serum presets at Monosounds since 2022, and lo-fi keys are the patches people tweak the least. They get used as-is. So the patch itself has to carry the whole vibe: pitch drift, vinyl dust, a dark filter, a little dirt.
Here’s the exact chain I use, with real numbers you can copy.
Why Build Lo-Fi Serum 2 Keys Instead of Sampling
Three reasons. First, a synth patch plays in any key at any tempo. A chopped sample doesn’t. Second, everything you make is yours, no clearance headaches. Third, Serum 2 finally has the engines this sound needs.
Each of the three oscillators can run as Wavetable, Sample, Multisample, Granular, or Spectral. That means a piano multisample on Osc A, a vinyl crackle sample on the noise osc, and a granular texture bed on Osc C, all inside one preset. Serum 1 couldn’t do any of that. If you own Serum 1, the Serum 2 upgrade is free, so there’s no excuse to skip it.
The Wobbly Tape Keys Recipe
Start with the source. On Osc A, use the Multisample engine with a soft piano or EP, or a mellow keys wavetable if you want something more synthetic. Keep unison modest: 3 voices, detune around 0.08. Sixteen unison voices is how you burn CPU for no lo-fi benefit.
Now the wobble, which is the whole trick. Real tape never holds pitch perfectly, so we fake two layers of instability:
- Fast flutter: LFO 1, sine shape, unsynced, rate around 0.3 Hz. Drag it onto Osc A’s fine pitch and set the depth to about 10-12 cents. You should barely hear it on a single note but clearly feel it on a held chord.
- Slow sag: LFO 2, triangle or smoothed random, rate around 0.05 Hz, depth 5-6 cents on the same target. This is the long, seasick drift old cassettes have.
Two LFOs at different speeds is what sells it. One LFO sounds like chorus. Two sound like a dying tape deck.
Set envelope 1 with a soft attack (10-20 ms), medium decay, and a release around 400-600 ms so chords smear into each other slightly.

The Vinyl Noise Layer
Serum 2’s noise oscillator can load any sample, and it ships with usable crackle and hiss sources. Load a vinyl crackle, then do two things most people forget.
Turn keytracking off. Crackle that changes pitch with the keys instantly gives away the trick. Dust sits at one pitch no matter what you play.
Keep it quiet. Around -24 dB relative to the keys is plenty. If you can clearly hear the crackle in the full mix, it’s too loud. It should disappear when muted and be missed, not noticed.
Set the noise to loop rather than one-shot, so long chords keep their dust. This one layer does more for a lo-fi Serum 2 patch than any plugin on the master bus. If you want the crackle to breathe, assign a very slow LFO to its level with a tiny depth.
Low-Pass Filter and Gentle Distortion
Lo-fi lives below 4 kHz. Serum 2 added 11 analog-style filter types, and they’re softer and rounder than the classic digital ones, which is exactly what keys need. Pick an analog low-pass, cutoff between 2.5 and 3.5 kHz, resonance low at 10-15%, and push the filter drive gently.
Then a touch of dirt in the FX chain. Serum 2’s distortion has an Overdrive mode that stays musical at low settings; keep the mix at 15-20%. Follow it with EQ pulling a little out of the top end, then a short dark reverb.
One Serum 2 feature that matters here: multiple FX buses. Route the keys through the distortion bus but send the noise osc to a clean bus. Distorted crackle turns into fizz. Clean crackle over distorted keys sounds like a record. If you want to hear the aggressive cousin of this exact chain, that’s basically the phonk approach in Serum 2 with everything pushed 3x harder.

Granular Texture Beds
This is where Serum 2 pulls away from every other option. Put Osc C in Granular mode and drop in a sustained source: a piano chord, a field recording, even a bounce of the patch you just built. Now shrink the grains.
My starting point: grain size around 80-150 ms, density low so grains just barely overlap, and a slow LFO on grain position so the playhead wanders through the sample. Add a little random spray to grain pitch, 5-10 cents, and it stops sounding like a sample and starts sounding like weather.
Sustained loops like this one make good source material for the bed.
Keep this layer 12-18 dB under the keys. It’s a bed, not a lead. Granular can get expensive on CPU, so watch the grain count; you rarely need more than a fraction of the 256 grains Serum 2 allows. Humanize It With Velocity Modulation
A robotic performance kills a lo-fi Serum 2 patch faster than any wrong setting. Open the mod matrix and give velocity three jobs:
- Velocity to filter cutoff, small amount. Soft notes get darker, hard notes poke through. This alone makes a static patch feel played.
- Velocity to volume, but less than the default. Around 40-50% depth feels like felt-covered hammers instead of an on/off switch.
- Velocity to overdrive amount, tiny. Harder playing gets slightly grittier, the way real electromechanical keys behave.
One more trick: assign a note-on random source to fine pitch with 3-4 cents of depth. Every keypress lands slightly differently, like worn tuning. And when you program the MIDI, drag notes a few ticks off the grid. The patch does half the humanizing; the performance does the rest.

You don’t have to start from an init patch. Lo-Fi Serum 2 Questions I Get Asked
Can I make lo-fi keys in Serum 1?
Partly. You can do the pitch drift LFOs and the filter in Serum 1. But you lose the multisample piano engine, the granular texture layer, and separate FX buses for the noise. Since Serum 2 is a free upgrade for Serum 1 owners, there’s no real reason to work around it.
Why do my lo-fi Serum 2 patches sound thin?
Usually the low-pass is doing all the work. A filter at 3 kHz removes highs but doesn’t add body. Fix it with filter drive, a touch of overdrive, and unison 3 with low detune. If it still sounds thin in the mix, the problem is probably EQ, not the patch; our EQ blueprint covers where keys need to sit.
What LFO rate works best for tape wobble?
Between 0.2 and 0.5 Hz for flutter, and something around 0.05 Hz for the slow sag. Keep both unsynced. Tempo-synced wobble sounds like an effect; free-running wobble sounds like hardware.
Do I need a separate vinyl plugin?
Not for the patch itself. Serum 2’s noise oscillator handles crackle inside the preset, which means the dust travels with the sound wherever you load it. A dedicated lo-fi plugin on the bus can still add wow and flutter to the whole mix later, but it’s optional.
