Making Serum preset packs has been my job since 2022, and in that time I’ve dissected more weak patches than I could ever count – plenty of my own among them. The same Serum 2 mistakes keep surfacing, and talent or pricey gear almost never has anything to do with them.
They’re habits. Pushing unison up because bigger feels better. Drowning a thin patch in reverb. Copying a preset without ever asking what makes it tick.
When Xfer Records released Serum 2 in March 2025, the synth gained three oscillators, five engines per oscillator, and multiple FX buses. All that extra power just amplifies these mistakes. Below are the ten I run into most, each with its exact fix.
1. Using Unison as a Crutch
Sound too small? Push unison to 16. For about ten seconds it feels like a win. Then you realize the attack has vanished, the fundamental is smeared, and your CPU meter is in full meltdown.
Sixteen detuned voices cancel each other into an average. Wide and strong are different things – a blurry wide lead evaporates the second your kick and bass show up.
The fix: begin at unison 3 with detune between 0.08 and 0.12, and raise it only when the sound truly demands it. Still thin at unison 3? Then the wavetable or the filter is your real problem, not voice count. A slow LFO on wavetable position is worth trying before anything else. 2. Skipping Gain Staging Inside the Synth
Gain stacks up in a lot of spots inside Serum 2: oscillator levels, filter drive, distortion, the compressor, the Master knob. Push them all and the signal clips before your mixer ever sees it.
A clipped output feels loud inside the synth and collapses in the mix. Worse, it tricks you – louder always sounds better, so a patch that’s merely hot reads as finished.
How I do it: oscillators near 70%, never pinned. When I add filter drive, the post-filter level comes down to compensate. Target peaks leaving the synth: around -6 dB. Effects come last, and I level-match after each one, no exceptions.
3. Too Much Sub in Your Leads
Give a lead a fat low end and it’s massive in solo. Then the bassline arrives, both fight for the same 40 to 150 Hz territory, and neither wins.
One job per element. A lead’s job begins around 300 Hz. That’s why I high-pass leads inside Serum 2 itself – 12 dB high-pass somewhere in the 150 to 250 Hz range, sitting in the second filter slot. Dual filter routing makes it trivial: character from the main filter, basement cleanup from the second.

4. Ignoring Phase and Retrig Settings
You can’t see this one, only hear it. Random phase means each note begins at a slightly different spot in the waveform. Wonderful for pads and strings, where it creates natural motion. Awful for basses and plucks, where identical hits are the whole point.
Five seconds fixes it. Bass, 808s, plucks: phase at 0, random amount off, so every note carries the exact same transient. Pads and atmospheres: keep phase random so sustained chords don’t turn robotic.
When a bass hits hard on some notes and limp on others, this is the culprit nearly every time.
5. Leaving the Macros Empty
A patch without macros is a photograph. Map four macros and it becomes an instrument.
Nearly every self-made patch that lands in my inbox has all four macros unassigned. So come arrangement time, each filter sweep and each build means opening the synth and automating knobs individually, one at a time.
Before you save any patch, do this instead: Macro 1 gets filter cutoff. Macro 2 gets something tonal – wavetable position or FM amount. Macro 3 gets FX, say reverb mix or delay feedback. Macro 4 gets movement, an LFO rate for instance. Drag-and-drop modulation makes this a 60-second job in Serum 2. 6. Stacking FX to Hide a Weak Patch
Reverb, more reverb on top, then chorus, then a compressor to glue the pile together. A patch that only works soaked in effects doesn’t work.
Here’s my test: kill the whole FX section. Serum 2’s FX buses make that painless. Dry patch sounds plain but usable? Great – effects are seasoning. Dry patch sounds broken? Go back to the oscillators and filter first. Nine times out of ten the raw sound wants a better wavetable, gentle wavetable position movement, or a filter envelope with a real shape to it.
The standard I hold our packs to: the dry patch must stand on its own before a single effect touches it.
7. Never Resampling
There’s a Resample to Oscillator function in Serum 2 that prints your current sound – effects and all – into a brand-new wavetable. Most producers never go near it.
Which is a waste, because resampling is the path to sounds nobody else owns. Design a patch, distort it, resample it, then filter and modulate what comes back. Two rounds of that and no factory table sounds anything like you.
You can also drop any .wav directly onto an oscillator and Serum 2 converts it into a wavetable. Vocal chops, one synth note from an old project, a field recording – everything counts. Make one resample pass per patch a standing habit.
8. Copying Presets Without Learning Them
Presets are not cheating – selling them is literally my living. But load, play, move on teaches you zero, and most Serum 2 mistakes persist precisely because nobody ever showed the person what a well-built patch looks like inside.
Treat presets like open-source code. Every single patch in our free Serum 2 preset pack – over 250, spanning basses, pads and 808s – exists to be pulled apart. Mute the oscillators one by one. Bypass the effects. Right-click knobs and see what’s modulating them, and how hard.
Then take one and rebuild it from an init patch. Your first attempt will fail. That failure is the actual lesson.
9. Designing and Mixing in Solo
Incredible on its own, invisible in the drop. Recognize that patch?
Solo is a liar. In solo you keep adding low end, width and reverb – precisely the things the full mix will punish later. Great mix elements frequently sound thin and underwhelming by themselves.
Design in context instead. Loop your track’s busiest 8 bars and shape the patch while everything else runs. Width, brightness and level get judged against the surrounding elements, never in a vacuum. 10. Working Without a Reference
No reference means “does this sound good?” has no answer at all. Ears calibrate to whatever they’ve been fed for the last 20 minutes.
Park one or two finished tracks from your genre on a muted channel in every project. A/B against them – level-matched – each time you believe a patch is done. And ask concrete questions: brighter or duller than their lead? Wider or narrower than their bass? Where does their pluck live when the chords come in?
Least glamorous fix on this list. Also the one that did the most for my presets.
Serum 2 Mistakes: Questions I Hear Every Week
Why do my Serum 2 patches sound weak compared to pro presets?
Typically it’s three of the mistakes above compounding: unison smearing the transient, zero gain staging so the patch clips quietly, and effects carrying all the weight. Strip everything back to dry oscillators and repair it from there, in that order.
How much unison is too much in Serum 2?
Past 7 voices you’re mostly buying blur with CPU. My numbers: 3 to 5 for leads, 5 to 7 for pads, and 1 for anything under 150 Hz. Need extra width? Use the Width knob or a resampled second layer rather than piling on voices.
Should beginners start with presets or from an init patch?

Do Serum 1 habits cause Serum 2 mistakes?
Some carry over. Serum 1 offered a single FX chain, so people still route everything through one bus – Serum 2’s multiple FX buses let you keep reverb away from your sub layer, for example. Veteran Serum 1 users also tend to skip the new engines completely. Granular and spectral each deserve a full afternoon.
Fix One Mistake per Session
Don’t attack all ten at once. Most Serum 2 mistakes are habits, and habits die one at a time. Choose whichever one stung hardest while you read and apply it to the next patch you build – gain staging plus phase settings alone will clean up everything you make within a week.
