I’ve made Serum preset packs for a living since 2022, and I’ve torn apart more weak patches than I can count – mine included. The same Serum 2 mistakes show up over and over, and almost none of them are about talent or expensive gear.
They’re habits. Cranking unison because it feels big. Piling on reverb because the raw patch is thin. Copying a preset and never asking why it works.
Since Xfer Records shipped Serum 2 in March 2025, the synth got three oscillators, five engines per oscillator, and multiple FX buses. More power means more ways to make these mistakes louder. Here are the ten I see most, with the exact fix for each.
1. Using Unison as a Crutch
Patch sounds small? Crank unison to 16. It works for about ten seconds. Then you notice the attack is gone, the fundamental is smeared, and your CPU meter is having a panic attack.
Sixteen detuned voices average each other out. Wide is not the same as strong – a wide, blurry lead disappears the moment the kick and bass come in.
The fix: start at unison 3, detune 0.08 to 0.12, and only go up if the sound genuinely needs it. If the patch still feels thin at unison 3, the problem is the wavetable or the filter, not the voice count. Try modulating wavetable position with a slow LFO first. Here’s where I usually land per sound type:

2. Skipping Gain Staging Inside the Synth
Serum 2 has a lot of places where gain piles up: oscillator levels, filter drive, distortion, the compressor, the Master knob. Max them all and the output clips before it even reaches your mixer.
Clipped output sounds loud in the synth and falls apart in the mix. It also fools you – everything sounds better louder, so you think the patch is done when it’s just hot.
My routine: oscillators around 70%, not maxed. If I push filter drive, I pull the level after the filter down to match. I aim for peaks around -6 dB coming out of the synth. FX go on last, and I level-match after every single one.
3. Too Much Sub in Your Leads
A lead with a big low end sounds huge in solo. Then the bass comes in, the two fight over the same 40 to 150 Hz range, and both lose.
Every element gets one job. A lead’s job starts around 300 Hz. So I high-pass leads inside Serum 2 itself – a 12 dB high-pass around 150 to 250 Hz in the second filter slot. The dual filter routing makes this painless: main filter does the character, second filter just cleans the basement.

4. Ignoring Phase and Retrig Settings
This one is invisible until you hear it. With random phase, every note starts at a slightly different point in the waveform. Great for pads and strings – it adds natural movement. Terrible for basses and plucks, where you want every note to hit identically.
The fix takes five seconds. For bass, 808s and plucks: set phase to 0 and turn the random amount off, so the transient is consistent on every single note. For pads and atmospheres: leave phase random so held chords don’t sound robotic.
If your bass sounds punchy on some notes and soft on others, this is almost always why.
5. Leaving the Macros Empty
A patch with no macros is a photograph. A patch with four mapped macros is an instrument.
Most self-made patches I get sent have all four macros sitting unassigned. Which means during arrangement, every filter sweep and every build requires opening the synth and automating individual knobs one by one.
Do this instead, before saving any patch: Macro 1 to filter cutoff. Macro 2 to something tonal – wavetable position or FM amount. Macro 3 to FX, like reverb mix or delay feedback. Macro 4 to movement, like an LFO rate. With drag-and-drop modulation this is a 60-second job in Serum 2. 6. Stacking FX to Hide a Weak Patch
Reverb, then more reverb, then chorus, then a compressor to glue the mess together. If a patch only sounds good drenched, the patch isn’t good.
My test: bypass the entire FX section. Serum 2 makes this easy with its FX buses. If the dry patch sounds boring but usable, fine – FX are seasoning. If the dry patch sounds broken, fix the oscillators and the filter first. Usually the raw sound needs a better wavetable, some subtle wavetable position movement, or a filter envelope with an actual shape.
The rule I use for our packs: the dry patch has to survive on its own before a single effect goes on.
7. Never Resampling
Serum 2 has a Resample to Oscillator function that bakes your current sound – FX included – into a fresh wavetable. Most producers never touch it.
That’s a shame, because resampling is how you get sounds nobody else has. Build a patch, distort it, resample it, then filter and modulate the result. Two passes of this and you’re miles away from any factory table.
You can also drag any .wav straight onto an oscillator and Serum 2 turns it into a wavetable. Vocal chops, a synth note from an old track, a field recording – all fair game. One resample pass per patch is a habit worth building.
8. Copying Presets Without Learning Them
Presets aren’t cheating. I sell them for a living. But loading a preset, playing it, and moving on teaches you nothing – and most Serum 2 mistakes survive exactly because the person never sees how a solid patch is actually built.
Use presets like open-source code. Every patch in our free Serum 2 preset pack – 250+ of them, from basses to pads to 808s – is meant to be dissected. Mute oscillators one at a time. Bypass the FX. Right-click knobs to see what modulates them and by how much.
Then rebuild one from an init patch. You’ll fail the first time. That failure is the lesson.
9. Designing and Mixing in Solo
The patch sounds incredible on its own and vanishes in the drop. Sound familiar?
Solo lies to you. In solo, you add more low end, more width, more reverb – everything the full mix will punish you for later. A great mix element often sounds thin and unimpressive by itself.
So design in context. Loop the busiest 8 bars of your track and tweak the patch while everything else plays. Judge width, brightness and level against the other elements, not in a vacuum. 10. Working Without a Reference
Without a reference, the question “does this sound good?” has no answer. Your ears adapt to whatever they’ve heard for the last 20 minutes.
Keep one or two finished tracks in your genre on a muted channel in every project. A/B against them, level-matched, every time you think a patch is done. Ask specific questions: is my lead brighter or duller than theirs? Is my bass wider or narrower? Where does their pluck sit when the chords play?
This is the least glamorous fix on the list and the one that improved my presets the most.
Serum 2 Mistakes: Questions I Hear Every Week
Why do my Serum 2 patches sound weak compared to pro presets?
Usually it’s three of the mistakes above stacked on top of each other: too much unison smearing the transient, no gain staging so the patch quietly clips, and FX doing the heavy lifting. Strip the patch back to dry oscillators and fix it from there, in that order.
How much unison is too much in Serum 2?
Above 7 voices you’re mostly paying CPU for blur. I use 3 to 5 on leads, 5 to 7 on pads, and 1 on anything living below 150 Hz. If you need more width, reach for the Width knob or a resampled second layer instead of more voices.
Should beginners start with presets or from an init patch?

Do Serum 1 habits cause Serum 2 mistakes?
Some do. Serum 1 had one FX chain, so people still mix everything into a single bus – Serum 2 has multiple FX buses that let you keep, say, reverb off your sub layer. And longtime Serum 1 users often ignore the new engines entirely. Granular and spectral are each worth an afternoon of your time.
Fix One Mistake per Session
Don’t try to fix all ten at once. Most Serum 2 mistakes are habits, and habits break one at a time. Pick the one that stung the most while reading and apply it to your very next patch – gain staging and phase settings alone will make everything you build cleaner within a week.
