Everyone wants that Afterlife sound right now. The rolling pluck, the dark pad underneath it, the arp that loops for eight bars and somehow gets more hypnotic instead of boring. Melodic techno in Serum 2 is the topic I get asked about most at Monosounds, so here’s the full recipe.
The good news: it’s only four synth elements. An analog-style pluck with a bit of detune drift, one huge dark pad, an arp pattern, and noise. The rest is arrangement discipline, and that part is free.
I’ll give you the exact settings I use in our own packs. Steal them.
The Melodic Techno Serum 2 Toolkit
Serum 2 shipped in March 2025 as a free upgrade for Serum 1 owners, and it added exactly the tools this genre needs: 11 analog-style filter types, a built-in arpeggiator, multiple FX buses, and granular and spectral oscillators for texture. If you’re still on Serum 1, grab the update from Xfer’s site before reading on. Same license, no extra cost.
Here’s how the four core elements map onto the synth. This is the cheat sheet I keep taped above my desk, more or less:

Tempo-wise, park yourself at 122-124 BPM. Every number below assumes that range.
The Analog-Style Pluck with Detune Drift
This is the signature sound. Underneath the mystique it’s a dark saw pluck, but the detail that sells it is pitch instability – that slow, slightly seasick drift you hear all over Anyma and Tale Of Us records.
Start with Osc A on a plain saw or one of the analog-style wavetables. Unison 5, detune 0.12, blend around 60. Not unison 16 – that eats CPU and smears the transient you need for the arp later.
Now the drift. Take an LFO, set it around 0.08 Hz, unsynced, sine shape. Drag it onto Osc A fine tune and set the amount to roughly +/-5 cents, bipolar. That tiny wobble is the entire “analog” illusion. I often add a second, even slower LFO to Osc B pitch at 3 cents so the two oscillators never drift in sync.
Filter next. Serum 2 added 11 analog-style emulations, and a 24 dB ladder-type lowpass at about 750 Hz is my default here. Send Env 2 to cutoff: attack 0, decay 350 ms, sustain 0, amount around +40. Amp envelope gets a 500 ms decay and a short release.
Finish with the Distortion effect in Overdrive mode, drive kept low, just to feed the filter some extra harmonics. Then a 1/8-dotted ping-pong delay at about 20 percent mix. Done – that’s the patch half the genre runs on.
One Huge Dark Pad
The pad’s job is to fill everything the pluck doesn’t. Dark, wide, slowly moving, and quieter in the mix than you think it should be.
Osc A: a warm wavetable, unison 7, detune 0.15. Osc B: the same table one octave down, unison 3. Then use Osc C for texture – the granular engine on a string or choir sample, 20-40 grains, slow grain rate, sounds unreasonably good here. Spectral works too if you want it cleaner and cheaper on CPU.
Route it through the dual filter in serial: a gentle 12 dB lowpass first, then a second lowpass you’ll automate during builds. Per-osc filter assignment means you can keep the granular layer out of the first filter if the whole thing gets too dull.
Amp envelope: attack around 800 ms, release 1.5 s. I wrote a full walkthrough in my Serum 2 pads and atmospheres guide, including the modulation moves that stop an 8-bar pad from sounding frozen. Hypnotic Arps with the Built-In Sequencer
Serum 1 had no arp, so we all bounced MIDI or leaned on external plugins. The arpeggiator in Serum 2 changed my whole melodic techno workflow.
Take your pluck patch and turn the arp on: rate 1/16, 8 steps, direction up. Hold a minor triad. Now the important part – don’t touch the notes yet. Edit per-step velocity instead. Drop steps 2, 4, 6 and 8 to around 60 percent, then map velocity to filter cutoff. Instant groove, zero new notes.
After that, use per-step length to make a few steps staccato and let one step ring out. That push and pull is what makes an arp hypnotic instead of mechanical. The full feature breakdown lives in my Serum 2 arpeggiator and sequencer guide.

Noise Layers and Automated Reverb Tails
Melodic techno lives on its noise floor. Solo any Afterlife track’s breakdown and you’ll hear air, vinyl crackle, distant room tone. Remove it and the mix suddenly feels cheap.
I keep a dedicated noise patch: the sample engine loaded with crackle or a field recording, or the granular engine stretching that same recording into a wash. Highpass it at 400 Hz and tuck it about 15 dB under the pluck. It should disappear when present and be missed when muted.
Reverb is the other half. Serum 2 has multiple FX buses, so put a hall (one of the three new reverb types) on its own bus with a decay around 8 seconds, and send only the pluck to it. Then automate the send: low during grooves, ramping up through the last 8 bars of a build, cut to zero on the drop. That reverb cut basically is the drop in this genre.
For extra motion, place the Bode frequency shifter after the reverb, shifting 1-2 Hz. The tail slowly spirals instead of just sitting there. We use this trick all over our free Serum 2 preset pack – open any patch in the atmospheres folder and you’ll find it, and it costs nothing to pull apart.
Arrangement: Tension Over 8 Bars
Here’s the part most tutorials skip. The patches above are maybe 40 percent of a melodic techno Serum 2 track. The other 60 percent is what changes, and when.
My rule: one change per 8 bars. Open the pluck filter 15 percent. Or bring in the noise layer. Or raise the reverb send. Never two at once. The listener should feel motion without being able to name it.
A typical 32-bar build in my projects looks like this: bars 1-8, arp alone with the filter closed. Bars 9-16, pad enters. Bars 17-24, noise layer in, filter opening. Bars 25-32, reverb send rides up and the kick drops out for the final four bars. Then the drop: reverb cut, filter open, bass in.

Common Questions
Can I make melodic techno in Serum 2 for free?
Serum 2 itself isn’t free, but it’s a free upgrade if you already own Serum 1, with lifetime free updates after that. If you own neither, Vital covers the wavetable basics at no cost – you’ll miss the granular engine, the arp and the FX buses, but you can absolutely learn the genre on it first.
What BPM should melodic techno be?
122-124 BPM is the sweet spot. Afterlife-style tracks sit anywhere from 120 to 126, but past 126 the track starts reading as peak-time techno instead of melodic.
Why does my pluck sound thin compared to the records?
Usually three things. No detune drift (the slow LFO on fine tune), no pad layered underneath doing the width work, and reverb inserted on the patch instead of automated on a send. Fix those three, then compare again.
Why do these patches spike my CPU?
Granular and spectral oscillators are the heavy hitters, followed by big unison counts. Stay at unison 3-7, set oversampling to 2x instead of 4x, cap pad polyphony around 8 voices, and freeze pad tracks once they’re printed. Serum 2 runs heavier than Serum 1 on some patches – that’s the honest tradeoff for the new engines.
