The Afterlife sound is what everybody chases at the moment. That rolling pluck, a dark pad sitting under it, an arp that repeats for eight bars and somehow grows more hypnotic instead of wearing out. No question lands in my inbox at Monosounds more often than melodic techno in Serum 2, so this is the complete recipe.
Good news first: the whole genre is four synth elements. A detuned analog-flavored pluck with some drift, one big dark pad, an arp pattern, and noise. Everything past that is arrangement discipline, which costs nothing.

The Melodic Techno Serum 2 Toolkit
When Serum 2 arrived in March 2025 as a free upgrade for Serum 1 owners, it brought precisely what this genre calls for: 11 analog-style filter types, a built-in arpeggiator, multiple FX buses, plus granular and spectral oscillators for texture work. This is how the four core elements translate to the synth. More or less the cheat sheet taped over my desk:

For tempo, sit at 122-124 BPM. All the numbers that follow assume that range.
The Analog-Style Pluck with Detune Drift
Here’s the signature. Strip away the mystique and it’s a dark saw pluck; what actually sells it is unstable pitch – the slow, slightly seasick wobble running through every Anyma and Tale Of Us record.
Osc A gets a plain saw or one of the analog-style wavetables. Unison 5, detune 0.12, blend near 60. Resist unison 16 – it burns CPU and blurs the transient the arp section needs later.
Then the drift itself. Grab an LFO, park it around 0.08 Hz, unsynced, sine shape. Drop it on Osc A fine tune with the amount at roughly +/-5 cents, bipolar. That small wobble is the whole “analog” illusion. A second, even slower LFO on Osc B pitch at 3 cents keeps the two oscillators from ever drifting in step, and I add one often.
On to the filter. Of the 11 analog-style emulations Serum 2 added, my default here is a 24 dB ladder-type lowpass sitting near 750 Hz. Route Env 2 to cutoff: attack 0, decay 350 ms, sustain 0, amount about +40. The amp envelope gets a 500 ms decay and a short release.
Last step: the Distortion effect in Overdrive mode with the drive kept low, purely to hand the filter some extra harmonics. Follow it with a 1/8-dotted ping-pong delay near 20 percent mix. That’s it – the patch half this genre runs on.
One Huge Dark Pad
The pad exists to fill whatever space the pluck leaves empty. It should be dark, wide, in slow motion, and sitting lower in the mix than feels right.
Osc A: a warm wavetable, unison 7, detune 0.15. Osc B runs the same table an octave below at unison 3. Texture comes from Osc C – load the granular engine with a string or choir sample, 20-40 grains, slow grain rate, and it sounds absurdly good. Spectral does the job too when you want something cleaner that costs less CPU.
Send it all through the dual filter in serial: a gentle 12 dB lowpass first, then a second lowpass you save for build automation. Filter assignment is per-osc, so the granular layer can skip the first filter if the whole thing turns too dull.

Hypnotic Arps with the Built-In Sequencer
There was no arp in Serum 1, so everyone bounced MIDI or leaned on external plugins. The arpeggiator in Serum 2 rewired my entire melodic techno workflow.
Load your pluck patch and switch the arp on: rate 1/16, 8 steps, direction up. Hold a minor triad. Now the part that matters – leave the notes alone for now. Work the per-step velocity instead: pull steps 2, 4, 6 and 8 down to about 60 percent, then route velocity to filter cutoff. Groove appears instantly, and you never added a note.
From there, shorten a few steps with per-step length and let one ring out. That give and take separates hypnotic from mechanical. The full feature rundown lives in my Serum 2 arpeggiator and sequencer guide.

Noise Layers and Automated Reverb Tails
The noise floor is where melodic techno actually lives. Solo the breakdown of any Afterlife track and there it is: air, vinyl crackle, far-off room tone. Take it out and the whole mix turns cheap on you.
My habit is a dedicated noise patch: crackle or a field recording in the sample engine, or the granular engine smearing that same recording into a wash. Highpass at 400 Hz and sit it roughly 15 dB below the pluck. Present, it should vanish; muted, it should be missed.
The other half is reverb. Serum 2 gives you multiple FX buses, so put a hall (one of the three new reverb types) on its own bus with the decay near 8 seconds, and route only the pluck into it. Then automate the send: quiet through grooves, rising across the final 8 bars of a build, killed at the drop. In this genre the reverb cut basically is the drop.
Extra motion trick: sit the Bode frequency shifter behind the reverb at a 1-2 Hz shift. Instead of just hanging there, the tail slowly corkscrews. This move is all over our free Serum 2 preset pack – open anything in the atmospheres folder and it’s right there, free to pull apart.
Arrangement: Tension Over 8 Bars
Now the section most tutorials never reach. The patches above get you maybe 40 percent of a melodic techno Serum 2 track. The remaining 60 percent is deciding what changes, and when it changes.
My rule is one change every 8 bars. Open the pluck filter by 15 percent. Or introduce the noise layer. Or push the reverb send up. Never two moves at once. Listeners should sense motion they can’t quite point at.
A typical 32-bar build in my sessions: bars 1-8, the arp alone, filter shut. Bars 9-16, the pad comes in. Bars 17-24, the noise layer arrives while the filter opens. Bars 25-32, the reverb send climbs and the kick vanishes for the last four bars. Then the drop hits: reverb cut, filter open, bass enters.

Common Questions
Can I make melodic techno in Serum 2 for free?
The synth itself costs money, unless you own Serum 1 – then the upgrade is free, with lifetime free updates afterward. Own neither? Vital handles the wavetable fundamentals for nothing. You lose the granular engine, the arp and the FX buses, but the genre is perfectly learnable on it first.
What BPM should melodic techno be?
The sweet spot is 122-124 BPM. Afterlife-style records range anywhere from 120 to 126, but push past 126 and people start hearing peak-time techno rather than melodic.
Why does my pluck sound thin compared to the records?
Three usual suspects. Missing detune drift (that slow LFO on fine tune), no pad layered underneath doing the width work, and reverb sitting as an insert on the patch instead of riding a send. Sort those three out, then A/B again.
Why do these patches spike my CPU?
The granular and spectral oscillators cost the most, with big unison counts right behind. Keep unison between 3 and 7, run oversampling at 2x rather than 4x, cap pad polyphony around 8 voices, and freeze pad tracks once they’re printed. Some patches genuinely run heavier in Serum 2 than in Serum 1 – the honest price of the new engines.
