How to Make Evolving Pads and Atmospheres in Serum 2

I’ve built hundreds of pad patches since 2022, and most of my early ones had the same problem. They sounded huge in solo and vanished the second a vocal came in. Static, washy, no life. If your serum 2 pads feel like a frozen block of chords, this guide is the fix.

Serum 2 solved almost everything that made evolving pads hard in the original. Three oscillators instead of two. A granular engine for texture. Multiple FX buses. Envelopes that sync to BPM and run for bars, not seconds.

I’ll walk through the full recipe we use at Monosounds, then build one complete patch from init so you can follow along at home.

Why Most Serum 2 Pads Sound Static

A pad is a long note, and long notes expose everything. If nothing changes over four bars, the ear tunes the sound out. Or worse, gets annoyed by it.

The fix isn’t more reverb. It’s slow modulation: parameters drifting at speeds you barely notice. Wavetable position, grain position, filter cutoff, stereo width. Each one moving on its own clock.

That’s the whole philosophy. Everything below is just picking targets and speeds.

Start With Three Detuned Layers

Serum 2 gives you three oscillators, each switchable between five engines. For pads I treat them as fixed roles: body, color, air.

  • Osc A, the body. Wavetable engine, a saw-heavy table, unison 5, detune 0.12, blend around 0.65. This carries the chord.
  • Osc B, the color. Wavetable engine, a different table one octave up, unison 3, detune 0.08, sitting about 8 dB under Osc A. Picking a genuinely different table matters more than the detune amount.
  • Osc C, the air. Granular or Sample engine, running quiet. More on this layer in a minute.

Keep unison modest. Unison 16 across three oscillators sounds like a jet engine and eats CPU for breakfast. Voices at 5 + 3 + 1 give you 90 percent of the width at a fraction of the cost.

And don’t limit yourself to synth tables for the color layer. Some of my most-used pad layers started life as horns. The stabs in our brass Serum presets turn into gorgeous Osc B material once you slow the attack way down.

Slow Wavetable LFOs Make Serum 2 Pads Breathe

Here’s the single most important move in this whole article: put a slow LFO on wavetable position.

Drag LFO 1 onto the WT Pos knob of Osc A. Set it to BPM sync, rate 4 bars, triangle shape, depth around 30 percent. Now the timbre drifts through the table across the whole phrase instead of sitting still.

Then the real trick: drag LFO 2 onto Osc B’s WT position at a different rate. I use 3 bars against the 4 bars on Osc A. Because the two cycles never line up, the layers never repeat the same combination. The pad keeps evolving for minutes without audibly looping.

Keep the depths low. If you can consciously hear a wobble, the LFO is too fast or too deep. You want the feeling that something changed, not the sound of an LFO working.

The Granular Texture Layer

This is where Serum 2 pulls ahead of Serum 1 and most competitors. Switch Osc C to the Granular engine and drop in any sustained sample: vinyl noise, a field recording, a bowed cymbal, your own voice singing one note.

My starting settings: grain size around 200 ms, density low so grains overlap gently, spray turned up so grain start points scatter, and a few cents of random pitch per grain. Then one very slow LFO, synced to 8 bars, sweeping the grain position through the sample.

Keep this layer 10 to 15 dB under the wavetable oscillators. It’s seasoning. Solo it and it sounds like almost nothing. Mute it and the whole pad suddenly feels flat.

Long Envelopes, Synced to the Track

Serum 2’s four envelopes can sync to BPM, and that quietly changed how I build pads.

Env 1, the amp envelope: attack around 900 ms, short decay, full sustain, release at 2.5 to 3 seconds. Long enough that chord changes smear into each other slightly. That smear is a feature, not a bug.

Env 2: switch it to BPM sync, set the attack to 2 bars, and route it to filter cutoff at about +25 percent. Every chord now opens up over two bars instead of just sitting there.

Env 3: another synced envelope with a 4-bar attack, routed to the granular layer’s level. The texture fades in late, so a held chord keeps developing long after the initial swell. Melodic techno runs on this trick, and I lean on it in nearly every patch in our melodic techno Serum 2 guide.

Movement From FX: Chorus, Hyper, and Two Buses

Serum 2 gives you multiple FX buses instead of Serum 1’s single chain, and every effect parameter is a modulation target. Use both facts.

My default pad bus: Chorus with rate around 0.3 Hz and mix at 30 percent, then Hyper/Dimension for that classic dimension-chorus width, then one of the new reverbs on a large size with mix near 25 percent.

Then route the granular layer to a second bus with its own reverb at 100 percent wet and no chorus at all. A soaked texture sitting behind a drier chord reads as depth. The same reverb on everything just reads as mud.

Per-effect modulation is the sleeper feature here. Put a 16-bar LFO on reverb size or chorus depth at a subtle amount. Now even the tail changes slowly over a section.

EQ Carving: Serum 2 Pads Under Vocals

The best pad in the world is useless if it fights the vocal. Pads and vocals share the same midrange, so something has to move. It’s the pad. Always the pad.

I do this with a static EQ on the pad channel rather than sidechain ducking, because pads should feel stable:

Full Patch Walkthrough: “Glass Tide”

Time to build one from scratch. Project at 74 BPM, chords Am – F – C – G, whole notes. Start from an init patch.

  1. Osc A: Wavetable engine, pick a saw-adjacent factory table. Unison 5, detune 0.12, blend 0.65.
  2. Osc B: Wavetable engine, a glassier table, +12 semitones, unison 3, detune 0.08, level down 8 dB. Set the Warp knob to a bend mode at a low amount for extra flavor.
  3. Osc C: Granular engine. Drop in a vinyl noise loop. Grain size 200 ms, low density, high spray, random pitch a few cents. Level down 12 dB.
  4. Env 1: attack 900 ms, sustain full, release 2.8 s. Env 2: BPM sync, 2-bar attack, routed to filter cutoff +25 percent. Env 3: BPM sync, 4-bar attack, routed to Osc C level.
  5. Filter: one of the new analog-style low-passes, cutoff around 1.2 kHz, both wavetable oscillators routed in, granular layer bypassing it.
  6. LFO 1: 4 bars, triangle, to Osc A WT position at 30 percent. LFO 2: 3 bars, to Osc B WT position at 25 percent. LFO 3: 8 bars, sweeping Osc C grain position.
  7. FX bus 1: Chorus, Hyper/Dimension, reverb at 25 percent mix. FX bus 2 for the granular layer only: reverb, 100 percent wet, large size.
  8. EQ last, using the table above: high-pass at 100 Hz, dips at 250 Hz and 2.5 kHz.

Why do my Serum 2 pads use so much CPU?

Pads stack the three most expensive things in the plugin: unison, granular, and reverb. Drop unison to 3-7 voices per oscillator, keep oversampling at 2x, and set a sensible polyphony limit. Xfer publishes official CPU guidelines on their support site, and freezing pad tracks once a part is done costs you nothing.

Can I use my Serum 1 presets for pads in Serum 2?

Yes, Serum 1 presets load fine in Serum 2. They’ll only use two oscillators though, so the quickest upgrade is adding a granular texture on the free third oscillator and a slow synced LFO on wavetable position.

What’s the best LFO rate for pad movement?

Between 2 and 8 bars for anything timbral, and 16 bars for FX parameters. The useful rule: rates on different targets shouldn’t divide evenly into each other. Pairs like 3 and 4 bars keep drifting; 2 and 4 bars repeat every two bars.

How do I turn my own sample into a pad?

Two ways. Drag a .wav onto an oscillator and Serum 2 converts it to a wavetable you can scan with an LFO. Or load it into the Granular engine and stretch it into a cloud. And once your patch sounds good with FX, “Resample to Oscillator” bakes the whole thing into a new table you can push even further.

One Last Thing

Movement is the entire secret. Three detuned layers, LFOs that never sync up, envelopes measured in bars, and an EQ that leaves room for the vocal. Get those four right and even a plain saw table turns into an atmosphere.
