Hundreds of pad patches have left my studio since 2022, and my early ones all shared one flaw. Huge in solo, gone the moment a vocal arrived. Static, washy, lifeless. If your serum 2 pads feel like a frozen block of chords, this guide is how you thaw them.
Serum 2 fixed nearly everything that made evolving pads painful in the original. Three oscillators instead of two. A granular engine for texture. Multiple FX buses. Envelopes that lock to BPM and stretch across bars rather than seconds.

Why Most Serum 2 Pads Sound Static
A pad is a long note, and a long note hides nothing. Four bars with zero change and the ear either tunes the sound out or starts resenting it.
More reverb won’t save you. Slow modulation will: parameters drifting at speeds you barely register. Wavetable position, grain position, filter cutoff, stereo width. Each one running on its own clock.
That’s the entire philosophy. Everything from here down is just choosing targets and choosing speeds.
Start With Three Detuned Layers
Serum 2 offers three oscillators, each able to run five engines. For pad work I lock them into roles: body, color, air.
- Osc A, the body. Wavetable engine, a saw-heavy table, unison 5, detune 0.12, blend near 0.65. This one carries the chord.
- Osc B, the color. Wavetable engine, a different table one octave up, unison 3, detune 0.08, tucked about 8 dB below Osc A. Choosing a genuinely different table matters more than any detune setting.
- Osc C, the air. Granular or Sample engine, kept quiet. This layer gets its own section in a minute.
Stay modest with unison. Three oscillators at unison 16 sound like a jet engine and devour CPU. Voices at 5 + 3 + 1 buy you 90 percent of the width for a fraction of the bill.
And the color layer doesn’t have to come from synth tables. Some of the pad layers I reuse most began life as horns. Slow the attack right down on the stabs from our brass Serum presets and they become gorgeous Osc B material.
Slow Wavetable LFOs Make Serum 2 Pads Breathe
If you take one move from this whole article, take this: a slow LFO on wavetable position.
Drag LFO 1 to Osc A’s WT Pos knob. BPM sync on, rate 4 bars, triangle shape, depth near 30 percent. The timbre now drifts through the table across the full phrase instead of parking in one spot.
Then the actual trick: drag LFO 2 onto Osc B’s WT position at a different rate. I run 3 bars against Osc A’s 4. The two cycles never align, so the layers never repeat the same combination, and the pad keeps developing for minutes without an audible loop.
Hold the depths down. If you can consciously point to a wobble, the LFO is too deep or too fast. The goal is the sense that something shifted, not the sound of an LFO doing its job.
The Granular Texture Layer
Here’s where Serum 2 leaves Serum 1 and most rivals behind. Flip Osc C to the Granular engine and feed it any sustained sample: vinyl noise, a field recording, a bowed cymbal, one note of your own voice.
My starting settings: grain size near 200 ms, density kept low so grains overlap gently, spray raised so the start points scatter, plus a few cents of random pitch per grain. Then a single very slow LFO, synced to 8 bars, dragging the grain position through the sample.
Sit this layer 10 to 15 dB beneath the wavetable oscillators. It’s seasoning. Soloed, it sounds like nearly nothing. Muted, the whole pad goes suddenly flat.

Long Envelopes, Synced to the Track
All four of Serum 2’s envelopes can sync to BPM, and that quietly rewrote how I make pads.
Env 1, the amp: attack around 900 ms, short decay, sustain full, release between 2.5 and 3 seconds. Long enough that chord changes bleed into each other a little. The bleed is a feature, not a bug.
Env 2: flip it to BPM sync, give it a 2-bar attack, route it to filter cutoff around +25 percent. Now every chord opens up across two bars instead of just existing.
Env 3: one more synced envelope, 4-bar attack, aimed at the granular layer’s level. The texture arrives late, so a held chord keeps growing well past the first swell. Melodic techno lives on this trick, and it shows up in nearly every patch in our melodic techno Serum 2 guide.
Movement From FX: Chorus, Hyper, and Two Buses
Serum 2 replaces Serum 1’s single FX chain with multiple buses, and every effect parameter accepts modulation. Both facts deserve to be used.
My default pad bus: Chorus at roughly 0.3 Hz rate and 30 percent mix, into Hyper/Dimension for the classic dimension-chorus width, into one of the new reverbs on a large size with mix around 25 percent.
Then send the granular layer to a second bus carrying its own reverb at 100 percent wet with no chorus whatsoever. A drenched texture behind a drier chord reads as depth. Identical reverb across everything just reads as mud.
Per-effect modulation is the sleeper here. Drop a 16-bar LFO on reverb size or chorus depth at a low amount, and even the tail evolves slowly across a section.
EQ Carving: Serum 2 Pads Under Vocals
The greatest pad ever made is worthless once it fights the vocal. Vocals and pads occupy the same midrange, so one of them has to yield. It’s the pad. Every time.
I handle this with a static EQ on the pad channel rather than sidechain ducking, because a pad should feel stable:

Full Patch Walkthrough: “Glass Tide”
Let’s build one from nothing. Project at 74 BPM, chords Am – F – C – G, whole notes, starting from an init patch.
- Osc A: Wavetable engine, a saw-adjacent factory table. Unison 5, detune 0.12, blend 0.65.
- Osc B: Wavetable engine, something glassier, +12 semitones, unison 3, detune 0.08, level pulled down 8 dB. Give the Warp knob a bend mode at a small amount for extra flavor.
- Osc C: Granular engine with a vinyl noise loop dropped in. Grain size 200 ms, density low, spray high, random pitch a few cents. Level down 12 dB.
- Env 1: attack 900 ms, sustain full, release 2.8 s. Env 2: BPM sync, 2-bar attack, to filter cutoff +25 percent. Env 3: BPM sync, 4-bar attack, to Osc C level.
- Filter: one of the new analog-style low-passes at roughly 1.2 kHz cutoff, both wavetable oscillators feeding it, granular layer routed around it.
- LFO 1: 4 bars, triangle, Osc A WT position at 30 percent. LFO 2: 3 bars, Osc B WT position at 25 percent. LFO 3: 8 bars, moving Osc C grain position.
- FX bus 1: Chorus, Hyper/Dimension, reverb at 25 percent mix. FX bus 2, granular layer only: reverb, 100 percent wet, large size.
- EQ at the end, following the table above: high-pass at 100 Hz, dips at 250 Hz and 2.5 kHz.

Serum 2 Pads FAQ
Why do my Serum 2 pads use so much CPU?
Because pads combine the three priciest things in the plugin: unison, granular, and reverb. Bring unison down to 3-7 voices per oscillator, hold oversampling at 2x, and set a reasonable polyphony cap. Xfer keeps official CPU guidelines on their support site, and freezing pad tracks once a part is finished costs you nothing.
Can I use my Serum 1 presets for pads in Serum 2?
Yes, Serum 1 presets open fine in Serum 2. They’ll only occupy two oscillators though, so the fastest upgrade is a granular texture on the empty third oscillator plus one slow synced LFO on wavetable position.
What’s the best LFO rate for pad movement?
Anything timbral: 2 to 8 bars. FX parameters: 16 bars. The rule worth remembering is that rates on different targets shouldn’t divide evenly into one another. A 3-bar against a 4-bar keeps drifting; a 2-bar against a 4-bar repeats every two bars.
How do I turn my own sample into a pad?
Two routes. Drop a .wav onto an oscillator and Serum 2 converts it into a wavetable you can scan with an LFO. Or feed it to the Granular engine and stretch it into a cloud. And when the patch sounds good with FX applied, “Resample to Oscillator” prints the whole thing into a fresh table you can push even harder.
One Last Thing
Movement is the whole secret. Three detuned layers, LFOs that refuse to sync, envelopes measured in bars, and an EQ that clears space for the vocal. Nail those four and a plain saw table becomes an atmosphere.
