How to Use Granular Synthesis in Serum 2

Most people open the granular engine in Serum 2 exactly once, get spooked, and never come back. A shame, because Serum 2 granular synthesis is the quickest route I know from a dull sample to a texture that actually breathes.

Since the engine landed in March 2025 I’ve been building granular patches for our preset packs. Some began life as a two-second vocal snippet. Others started as vinyl noise I recorded off my own turntable.

This tutorial covers the three controls doing the real work, hands you three recipes you can copy today, and shows how to keep granular patches from devouring your CPU.

How the Serum 2 Granular Engine Works

Any oscillator in Serum 2 can run one of five engines: Wavetable, Sample, Multisample, Granular, and Spectral. All five get covered in my guide to Serum 2 oscillator types, so here’s the compressed version.

Granular carves a sample into tiny slices, called grains, and streams them back at you. Every grain carries its own pitch, position, and length. Per oscillator, Serum 2 can run up to 256 grains simultaneously.

And that’s really the entire trick. Long grains in a dense, overlapping stream come out as a pad. Short grains in a sparse stream come out as glitchy rhythm. One sample, one engine, two different settings.

Ten seconds gets you started: drop any .wav onto an oscillator, flip the engine to Granular. No separate sampler needed, no third-party plugin.

Grain Size, Density, and Position Explained

The granular page has plenty of knobs, but 90% of the work comes from three of them.

Grain size sets how long each slice runs. Long grains (150 ms and beyond) preserve the source’s character – a vocal still registers as a vocal. Short grains (below 50 ms) demolish the source, leaving pure texture, or clicks once you push too hard.

Density controls how many grains fire over time. Keep it low and you get gaps and stutter. Push it high and the grains overlap into a continuous smear. When I’m making pads I raise density until no individual grain is audible anymore.

Position decides where in the sample each grain gets pulled from. Park it and the result is a frozen drone. Modulate it slowly and the sound crawls through the sample like a tape head. No control gets leaned on harder in the Serum 2 granular patches I’ve shipped than position modulation.

The starting points I genuinely use:

These are defaults, not laws. Each source sample responds in its own way, and discovering how is half the fun.

Three Serum 2 Granular Recipes

All three are actual patches from my template. Copy the settings as written, then substitute your own samples.

Recipe 1: Texture Pad From a Vocal

Grab any vocal phrase between one and four seconds. Dry beats reverb-soaked here, since the space gets added later.

Pull it onto OSC A and flip to Granular. Grain size around 200 ms, then raise density until the gaps close up. Switch keytracking on so the patch stays in tune up and down the keyboard.

Here’s the part that matters: route a slow LFO to grain position. Mine is synced to 8 bars, triangle shape, full depth. The patch drifts through the vocal endlessly and never repeats the same texture.

Cap it off with a low-pass around 8 kHz and one of the three new reverb types on its own FX bus. Need more body under the pad? Add a quiet wavetable saw on OSC B. There’s a complete guide to building pads and atmospheres in Serum 2 if you want to push this further.

Recipe 2: Rhythmic Grains Synced to BPM

This recipe converts any sustained sample into a groove element. I use it all the time in tech house at 124 BPM – several patches from our tech house presets roundup were built exactly like this.

Begin with grain size at 40-60 ms and density low enough that single grains stay audible. Route an LFO to grain position, give the LFO a stepped shape with 8 or 16 steps, and sync it to 1/16.

Every 16th note now leaps to a fresh spot in the sample. Rhythmic chop, instantly. Feed it through the built-in arpeggiator with per-step velocity for added groove, and hold the amp envelope short and gated.

Bonus trick: use the mod matrix to drop grain pitch 12 semitones on every fourth step. It comes across as a bass answer living inside the same patch.

Recipe 3: Lo-Fi Texture From Vinyl Noise

Capture four bars of vinyl crackle, or reuse whatever noise bed you’ve got sitting around. Onto an oscillator it goes, engine to Granular, grain size near 100 ms, density medium-high.

Sprinkle a little randomness onto grain position so the crackle never audibly loops. Low-pass the whole thing at 4 kHz. Slide it under your keys or chords around -18 dB and the entire track warms up instantly.

Granular Eats CPU. Here’s How to Control It

Fair warning up front: granular patches are the heaviest thing Serum 2 can do. The math is unforgiving – grain count multiplies against density, unison, and polyphony. Hold an 8-note chord on a dense patch at unison 7 and your laptop fan spins up like a jet.

My routine on every granular patch, in this order:

  • Take unison down to 3 on the granular oscillator. Granular is wide by nature; unison 16 is just wasted heat.
  • Rein in the density. When the texture sounds identical at half the density, half the density is correct.
  • Cap the polyphony. A pad rarely needs beyond 8 voices.
  • Hold oversampling at 2x. More almost never improves a granular texture.

Once the part is written, freeze the track. Better still, run Resample to Oscillator, which prints your granular patch, FX and all, into a new wavetable. The resampled copy costs a fraction of the CPU while staying fully playable live.

Is the granular engine as good as a dedicated granular synth?

For musical purposes – pads, textures, rhythmic chops – yes. Dedicated tools reach deeper into experimental territory, but the workflow argument goes to Serum 2: your granular oscillator lives next to a wavetable oscillator, the complete mod matrix, and multiple FX buses. On most tracks that trade wins.

What’s the difference between the granular and spectral engines?

Granular operates in the time domain, slicing the sample into grains. Spectral operates in the frequency domain, resynthesizing the sample from its partials so you can edit each one. Texture and rhythm favor granular; morphing and surgical redesign favor spectral. The side-by-side comparison is in my spectral oscillator guide.

Can I use my own samples for granular?

Yes. Any .wav dragged straight onto an oscillator works once you pick the Granular engine. Vocals, field recordings, stems from old songs – anything a few seconds long is great material. Longer samples run fine too, though position modulation becomes trickier to control.

Why does my granular patch crackle?

Blame CPU before the patch. Look at density and unison first, push the audio buffer to 256 or 512 samples, and freeze the track when the part is finished. Crackling at low CPU load usually means the grains got too short – anything under about 20 ms clicks by nature, so lengthen the grains or back off the density.
