How to Make Custom Wavetables in Serum 2

Downloading wavetables is universal. Making your own is rare. Which is a pity, because Serum 2 custom wavetables are the cheapest route to a sound that belongs to you alone, and building one takes minutes rather than hours.

I’ve made Serum preset packs at Monosounds since 2022, so here’s a real number: about 4 in 10 patches across our commercial packs sit on tables we built ourselves. Nothing wrong with stock tables. But whenever a bass punches through a mix in a way you can’t quite explain, a custom table is usually behind it.

This guide walks the four methods I genuinely use to build tables in Serum 2: dropping a .wav onto an oscillator, drawing inside the wavetable editor, the formula generator, and the Resample to Oscillator trick. Also covered: where the files actually live on disk, and how to stop a personal wavetable bank from becoming a junk drawer.

Why Bother With Serum 2 Custom Wavetables

Three reasons. Identity comes first. Any producer with 30 dollars owns the exact stock tables you do. A table cut from your own voice or your own guitar exists nowhere else on earth.

Second, understanding. After you’ve chopped a vocal into frames and seen what pitch detection does with it, presets lose their mystery. You start reading patches rather than merely playing them.

Third, out of Serum 2’s five oscillator engines, the Wavetable engine is still the one you’ll reach for most. When each engine earns its keep is covered in my guide to Serum 2 oscillator types. Custom tables are how that main engine becomes yours.

The Fastest Way: Drag a .wav Onto an Oscillator

The quickest path to Serum 2 custom wavetables is straight drag and drop, and it’s every bit as easy as it sounds. Grab any .wav and drop it directly onto the oscillator’s waveform display. Serum 2 analyzes it and cuts it into wavetable frames right there.

Here, source material outweighs settings. Four years in, these are my rules:

  • Pick something sustained and monophonic. A single vocal note, one guitar string, one synth stab. 1 to 3 seconds covers it.
  • Zero reverb or delay on the source. Tails smear across frames.
  • Loud beats quiet. Weak sources make thin, noisy tables. Normalize before importing.

On drop, Serum asks how you want it sliced. Anything with an obvious pitch should get the pitch-based analysis, so frame length tracks the sound’s actual cycle. Result: a smooth table that plays in tune. Fixed-size slicing on that same vocal comes out detuned and glitchy, which occasionally is precisely what a techno lead calls for. Try both; it takes ten seconds.

Now sweep the WT Pos knob slowly. That knob just became a guided tour through your source. Attach an LFO, rate 1/2 at 124 BPM, and you own movement no stock patch can offer.

From .wav to Wavetable in 6 Steps

Wavetable Editor Basics

The editor is where Serum 2 custom wavetables get tidied after import, and where drawn-from-nothing tables come to life. Launch it from the oscillator section and your table appears as a stack of frames to step through.

The tools I really touch, ordered by how often:

  • Delete frames. Imported audio nearly always carries garbage at the head (the attack click) and the end (silence). Trim both. Forty frames of pure sweet spot beat 200 frames that are 80% padding.
  • Draw with grid snap on. Freehand curves come out sounding like noise. Snapped lines and segments produce shapes that make harmonic sense.
  • Edit harmonics, not the waveform. In the spectral view you can raise or lower individual harmonics. Strip every even harmonic from a saw frame and you’re most of the way to a square. Push harmonic 7 by itself and out comes a hollow, bell-like color no pencil tool can draw.
  • Morph between keyframes. Put a sine at frame 1 and your harmonically wrecked saw at frame 64, let Serum fill in the frames between, and WT Pos turns into a timbre fader.

If what you actually want is partial editing across an entire piece of audio instead of frame by frame, that’s a different tool solving a different problem: the Spectral engine in Serum 2 handles resynthesis with partial-level control and frequently wins for pads built from long samples.

The Formula Generator in One Minute

On the formula tab you type math and receive a waveform. A pure sine is one short expression; every added term piles another harmonic on. I keep it for exactly one job: surgically clean digital shapes that hand-drawing can’t reach. Mostly odd-harmonic stacks for chiptune leads. Not comfortable with sin() and x? Skip the tab completely and lose nothing; drag-and-drop plus resampling handle 95% of real-world use.

Resample to Oscillator: Bake FX Into a Table

This is Serum 2’s deepest rabbit hole and my personal favorite. The concept: build a patch, push it through effects, then hit Resample to Oscillator to print the processed sound back into the oscillator as a fresh wavetable. The effects are now part of the table itself.

Why that matters: with multiple FX buses in Serum 2, you can distort a sound, frequency-shift it through the Bode shifter, drench it in reverb, bake the whole mess into a table, then feed that table into a clean, empty FX chain. Two or three generations of this and you have tables with a grit and character no single pass of knob-turning will ever produce.

My go-to bass recipe: plain saw to start, Overdrive distortion mode around 40% drive, a touch of Bode shifting for inharmonic bite, resample. Filter the new table, resample once more. Second-generation tables of this kind drive a lot of the low end in our Colors preset pack, and the same trick sits behind most patches in my Serum 2 bass presets roundup.

Extra win: baked-in FX cost zero CPU during playback. A resampled table with distortion embedded runs as light as any stock table. In a crowded project, that adds up.

Where Serum 2 Wavetables Live on Disk

Serum 2 custom wavetables are ordinary .wav files carrying Serum metadata. So they copy, back up and share like any file. The defaults:

Don’t take defaults on faith, though. Installers and older setups shuffle locations around. The dependable check: open Serum 2, hit the Menu tab, choose Show Serum Presets Folder. Whatever folder opens is the truth, with Tables inside it. And if something looks wrong, Xfer’s official Serum 2 page links their support docs on folder setup.

Two habits worth keeping. Whenever you copy files in by hand, rescan folders from the menu so Serum notices them. And keep the Tables folder backed up off your machine, because your DAW project points at tables but never embeds them. Lose that folder and old projects come up with silent oscillators.

Organizing a Personal Wavetable Bank

Tables supports subfolders, and this is exactly where people fall down: hoarding. Five hundred anonymous files named “resample_final_2.wav” isn’t a bank, it’s a landfill. There’s a reason table hoarding sits near the top of my Serum 2 beginner mistakes list.

The structure behind every Monosounds pack since 2022:

  • Tables/MS_Bass, Tables/MS_Vox, Tables/MS_Keys — a folder per source type.
  • Names run prefix, source, character: MS_Vox_Ah_Dark.wav. Half a year later that name still says everything I need.
  • A _Lab folder for experiments. A table only graduates once it’s earned a place in three real patches. Most never make it, which is fine.

FAQ: Serum 2 Custom Wavetables

Do Serum 1 wavetables work in Serum 2?

They do. Tables are .wav files and the format survived the upgrade. Drop your old Serum 1 tables into the Serum 2 Tables folder, rescan, finished. Serum 1 presets open in Serum 2 as well, so your old library carries over intact.

What’s the best source length for an imported wavetable?

One to three seconds of a sustained, single-pitch sound. Frames in Serum are 2048 samples apiece and a table caps at 256 frames, so longer files simply get truncated or thinned. Short and clean wins over long and busy, always.

Why does my imported table sound out of tune?

The slicing missed the source’s cycle length. Import again using pitch-based analysis, and confirm the source is monophonic, since pitch detection gets lost on chords. Still a few cents sharp or flat? Correct it with the oscillator’s fine tune and get on with it.

Do custom wavetables use more CPU than stock ones?

Nope. A table is a table, and Serum has no idea who authored it. Wavetable-engine CPU comes down to unison count and quality settings; hold unison at 3 to 7 instead of 16 and you’re clear. The expensive engines are Granular and Spectral, not your custom tables.
