Open Serum 2, click the engine menu at the top of oscillator A, and you get five options: Wavetable, Sample, Multisample, Granular, Spectral. The serum 2 oscillators went from one type to five overnight, and most producers I talk to still only ever touch the first one.

That’s a waste. These are basically five synths sharing one interface, and each engine is the fastest route to a specific kind of sound. Pick the wrong one and you’ll fight the patch for an hour. Pick the right one and it’s done in ten minutes.

I’ve built a few hundred patches in Serum 2 since it shipped in March 2025 – that’s the day job at Monosounds. Here’s what each engine does, when I actually reach for it, what it costs your CPU, and one concrete patch idea per engine.

How Serum 2 Oscillators Are Set Up

Quick structure first, because it changed. Serum 2 gives you three full oscillators instead of two. Each one can run any of the five engines, independently of the others.

So one patch can hold a granular vocal texture on osc A, a wavetable bass on osc B, and a sampled noise layer on osc C. All three share the same mod matrix, the same dual filter routing, and the same FX buses.

That’s the real story with the serum 2 oscillators: it’s not five separate toys. It’s one modulation system with five different sound sources plugged into it. The four envelopes, the new LFO modes, drag-and-drop routing – everything works the same no matter which engine you pick.

Wavetable: Still the Default, and That’s Fine

This is the classic Serum engine. A wavetable is a stack of single-cycle waveforms, and you sweep through the frames with the WT Position knob. Modulate that position and the timbre moves.

Reach for it when you want basses, leads, plucks – anything that needs movement and bite. It’s still where I build maybe 60% of my patches, and most of the sounds in our NextGen Vol. 3 expansion run on it.

CPU cost is the baseline. The engine itself is cheap; unison voices are what hurt. Unison 16 on three oscillators will choke a laptop. Unison 5 won’t.

Patch idea: a simple reese. Basic Shapes table, saw frame, unison 5, detune 0.12. Copy to osc B and drop it an octave. Low-pass filter around 400 Hz with a slow LFO on cutoff. That’s the skeleton behind half the bass presets you hear in DnB.

And you’re not stuck with factory tables. Drag any .wav onto the oscillator and Serum 2 converts it into a table on the spot. I wrote a separate guide on making custom wavetables if you want to go down that road.

Sample: The Cheapest Layer in the Synth

The Sample engine plays one audio file per note, pitched chromatically across the keyboard. Think of it as Serum 1’s noise oscillator after it grew up: start-point modulation, loop modes, full pitch tracking.

Reach for it for 808s, transient click layers, noise beds, risers – any sound where one sample stretched across the keys is good enough.

CPU cost is the lowest of all five. It’s just sample playback. I treat it as the free layer when a patch is already heavy.

Patch idea: drag your favorite 808 wav straight into the Sample engine. You get an instantly playable 808 with Serum’s filters on top. Add the Overdrive distortion mode, pull the tone back, and it sits in a mix without any extra plugins.

Multisample: Real Instruments via SFZ

Multisample loads SFZ instruments – multiple samples mapped across key ranges and velocity layers. It’s a proper sampler living inside your synth.

Reach for it when you want a piano, guitar, or string sound that responds like the real instrument but runs through Serum’s filters and FX buses. That’s the trick: sampled realism plus synth processing in one preset, one plugin window.

CPU cost is light to moderate. It scales with voice count more than anything else, so watch long pedal-down chords.

Patch idea: lo-fi keys. Load an SFZ piano, low-pass at 3.5 kHz, add a little chorus and a short dark reverb. Route velocity to filter cutoff at about 20% so soft playing gets duller. That’s the kind of patch that used to need a separate sampler.

Granular: Texture From Anything

Granular chops a sample into tiny grains – up to 256 of them – and rebuilds the sound from that cloud. Grain size, density, position, and pitch spray are all modulation targets.

Reach for it for pads, ambient textures, and intros. Any boring source turns into atmosphere: a single vocal note, a guitar chord, a field recording of your kitchen.

CPU cost is the highest in Serum 2 once you push it. Grain count multiplies per voice, so a dense granular pad with 8-note polyphony adds up fast. Keep grain counts sensible and cap polyphony at 4-6 for pads.

Patch idea: a vocal pad from one sustained note. Grain size around 100 ms, density up until the grains blur together, slow LFO on grain position, big hall reverb on its own FX bus. The full walkthrough is in my Serum 2 granular tutorial.

Spectral: Sound as a List of Partials

Spectral resynthesizes audio into individual partials – the sine components that make up the sound – and lets you edit them one by one. Mute partials, redraw them, morph between frames over time.

Reach for it for bells, metallic keys, morphing drones, and cleanup jobs like pulling the breath noise out of a sampled flute. Nothing else in Serum 2 does this.

CPU cost sits in the middle – heavier than plain wavetable, usually lighter than dense granular. Frame morphing on long notes is the expensive part.

Patch idea: glass bell keys. Resynthesize a wine glass hit, mute the rough inharmonic partials in the editor, then morph slowly toward a darker frame over 3-4 seconds. I break the whole editor down in the spectral oscillator guide.

If a table doesn’t stick, do it the practical way: grab our 250+ free Serum 2 presets, open a few patches from different categories, and check which engine each one uses. Seeing a finished pad built on granular teaches faster than any manual.

What Each Engine Costs Your CPU

Serum 2 runs heavier than Serum 1 on some patches. That’s the honest tradeoff for three oscillators and five engines. Xfer publishes official CPU guidelines, and they match my experience.

The five serum 2 oscillators don’t cost the same, and settings matter more than the engine. My rules: unison 3-7 instead of 16, because you barely hear the difference in a full mix. Oversampling at 2x while writing, 4x only if you hear aliasing. Poly limit of 6-8 on pads.

Engine ranking from cheap to expensive on my machine: Sample, Multisample, Wavetable, Spectral, Granular. But a wavetable patch with unison 16 will still out-eat a modest granular one. And if the GUI stutters on an older graphics card, set UseOpenGL=0 in Serum.cfg – it fixes most GPU-related glitches.

FAQ: Serum 2 Oscillator Questions

Do Serum 1 presets work with the new engines?

Yes. Serum 1 presets load fine in Serum 2 – they just come in as wavetable patches, since that’s all Serum 1 had. Once loaded, you can switch any oscillator to a different engine and rebuild from there.

Which Serum 2 engine is best for bass?

Wavetable, about 90% of the time. It has the movement and the aggression. The exception is 808-style bass, where the Sample engine with your own 808 wav is faster and cleaner. For techno rumbles, layering both in one patch works well.

Do the new engines cost extra money or CPU?

Money: no. Serum 2 was a free upgrade for Serum 1 owners, with lifetime free updates. CPU: only if you push them. A plain wavetable patch costs about the same as it did in Serum 1. Dense granular clouds and long spectral morphs are the new expenses, and both respond well to lower polyphony.

How many oscillators does Serum 2 actually have?

Three main oscillators, each switchable between the five engines, plus the sub and noise oscillators. Serum 1 had two main oscillators, so you get one extra slot and far more range per slot.
