Click the engine menu at the top of oscillator A in Serum 2 and five choices appear: Wavetable, Sample, Multisample, Granular, Spectral. The serum 2 oscillators jumped from one type to five in a single release, and most producers I know still never leave the first option.

Which is a shame. What you’ve got is essentially five synths behind one interface, and each engine is the shortest path to a particular kind of sound. Choose wrong and the patch fights you for an hour. Choose right and you’re finished in ten minutes.

Since Serum 2 shipped in March 2025 I’ve built a few hundred patches in it – that’s my day job at Monosounds. So here’s each engine: what it does, when I actually pick it, what it charges your CPU, and one concrete patch idea apiece.

How Serum 2 Oscillators Are Set Up

Structure first, because the structure changed. Serum 2 hands you three full oscillators rather than two, and each can run any of the five engines independently of the rest.

Meaning one patch might carry a granular vocal texture on osc A, a wavetable bass on osc B, and a sampled noise layer on osc C. All three feed the same mod matrix, the same dual filter routing, and the same FX buses.

That’s the real headline about the serum 2 oscillators. You’re not looking at five separate toys, you’re looking at one modulation system with five interchangeable sound sources plugged into it. The four envelopes, the new LFO modes, drag-and-drop routing – identical behavior regardless of engine.

Wavetable: Still the Default, and That’s Fine

The classic Serum engine. A wavetable is a stack of single-cycle waveforms you sweep through with the WT Position knob, and modulating that position moves the timbre.

Grab it for basses, leads, plucks – any sound that needs bite and motion. Maybe 60% of my patches still start here, and it powers most of the sounds in our NextGen Vol. 3 expansion.

CPU-wise this is the baseline. The engine itself costs little; unison voices are the expensive part. Three oscillators at unison 16 will strangle a laptop. Unison 5 won’t.

Patch idea: a straightforward reese. Basic Shapes table on the saw frame, unison 5, detune 0.12. Copy the oscillator to osc B, drop it an octave. Low-pass filter near 400 Hz, slow LFO on cutoff. That skeleton sits underneath half the bass presets in DnB.

Factory tables aren’t a limit either. Drop any .wav onto the oscillator and Serum 2 turns it into a table right there. There’s a separate guide of mine on making custom wavetables if that rabbit hole appeals.

Sample: The Cheapest Layer in the Synth

The Sample engine plays a single audio file per note, pitched chromatically up and down the keyboard. Picture Serum 1’s noise oscillator after it grew up: start-point modulation, loop modes, proper pitch tracking.

Grab it for 808s, transient click layers, noise beds, risers – anywhere one sample stretched across the keys does the job.

It’s the lightest of the five on CPU. Plain sample playback, nothing more. When a patch is already heavy, this is my free layer.

Patch idea: pull your favorite 808 wav straight into the Sample engine. Instantly playable 808 with Serum’s filters over it. Switch on the Overdrive distortion mode, roll the tone back, and it sits in a mix with no extra plugins involved.

Multisample: Real Instruments via SFZ

Multisample reads SFZ instruments – several samples mapped over key ranges and velocity layers. Effectively a real sampler living inside your synth.

Grab it when you want piano, guitar, or strings that respond like the actual instrument but pass through Serum’s filters and FX buses. That combination is the whole appeal: sampled realism and synth processing in one preset, one window.

CPU cost runs light to moderate. Voice count is what scales it, so keep an eye on long pedal-down chords.

Patch idea: lo-fi keys. SFZ piano, low-pass at 3.5 kHz, a bit of chorus, a short dark reverb. Send velocity to filter cutoff around 20% so gentle playing comes out duller. Patches like this used to demand a separate sampler.

Granular: Texture From Anything

Granular slices a sample into tiny grains – as many as 256 – and reassembles the sound from that cloud. Grain size, density, position, and pitch spray all accept modulation.

Grab it for pads, ambient textures, intros. Any dull source becomes atmosphere: one vocal note, a guitar chord, a field recording of your kitchen.

Pushed hard, it’s the priciest engine in Serum 2. Grain count multiplies per voice, so a dense granular pad at 8-note polyphony stacks up quickly. Keep grain counts reasonable and hold pads to 4-6 voices of polyphony.

Patch idea: a vocal pad grown from one held note. Grain size near 100 ms, density raised until the grains smear together, a slow LFO on grain position, big hall reverb on its own FX bus. The step-by-step version lives in my Serum 2 granular tutorial.

Spectral: Sound as a List of Partials

Spectral resynthesizes audio into its individual partials – the component sines – and hands you editing at that level. Mute partials, redraw them, morph between frames across time.

Grab it for bells, metallic keys, morphing drones, and surgical jobs like stripping the breath noise out of a sampled flute. No other part of Serum 2 can do this.

CPU cost lands in the middle: heavier than plain wavetable, usually lighter than dense granular. The expensive bit is frame morphing on long notes.

Patch idea: glass bell keys. Resynthesize a wine glass hit, silence the rough inharmonic partials in the editor, then morph gradually toward a darker frame over 3-4 seconds. The whole editor gets dissected in my spectral oscillator guide.

What Each Engine Costs Your CPU

Some patches run heavier in Serum 2 than they did in Serum 1. That’s the honest price of three oscillators and five engines. Xfer keeps official CPU guidelines published, and my experience lines up with them.

The five serum 2 oscillators aren’t priced equally, and settings outweigh engine choice anyway. My rules: unison 3-7 rather than 16, since a full mix hides the difference almost completely. Oversampling at 2x while writing, 4x only once you actually hear aliasing. Polyphony capped at 6-8 for pads.

Cheapest to priciest on my machine: Sample, Multisample, Wavetable, Spectral, Granular. That said, a wavetable patch running unison 16 still out-eats a modest granular one. And if the GUI stutters on an aging graphics card, put UseOpenGL=0 in Serum.cfg – that clears up most GPU-related glitches.

FAQ: Serum 2 Oscillator Questions

Do Serum 1 presets work with the new engines?

Yes. Serum 1 presets open cleanly in Serum 2 – they simply arrive as wavetable patches, because wavetable was all Serum 1 had. From there you can flip any oscillator over to another engine and rebuild.

Which Serum 2 engine is best for bass?

Wavetable, roughly 90% of the time. That’s where the movement and aggression live. The exception is 808-style bass, where the Sample engine loaded with your own 808 wav is quicker and cleaner. For techno rumbles, one patch layering both works nicely.

Do the new engines cost extra money or CPU?

Money: no. Serum 2 arrived as a free upgrade for Serum 1 owners, with lifetime free updates. CPU: only when pushed. A basic wavetable patch costs roughly what it did in Serum 1. The new bills come from dense granular clouds and long spectral morphs, and both drop sharply with lower polyphony.

How many oscillators does Serum 2 actually have?

Three main oscillators, each able to run any of the five engines, plus the sub and noise oscillators. Serum 1 offered two main oscillators, so you gain a slot and each slot gains enormous range.
