How to Make Hard-Hitting 808s in Serum 2

Your Serum 2 808 sounds massive in headphones. Then you play the bounce off a phone speaker and the low end just vanishes. No bass, no knock, nothing.

The fix isn’t a secret plugin chain after the synth. It’s how you build the patch. A good 808 needs four things: a clean core, a pitch click, the right saturation, and tuning that actually matches your song key.

I’ve built hundreds of 808 patches for our packs since 2022, including the ones in our free Serum 2 808 presets. Here’s the exact process, with the numbers I actually use.

Start With a Sine or Triangle Core

Init the patch and load the Default wavetable on Osc A. Position 1 is a pure sine. That’s your sub. Keep unison at 1 – detuned voices smear the fundamental and make the low end wobble instead of hitting.

Want a bit more presence before any distortion? Use a triangle instead. Same fundamental, plus odd harmonics, so it reads better on small speakers even dry. The original TR-808 kick was close to a sine, but half the 808s in modern trap are really triangle cores.

Set Osc A to Oct -1 so your MIDI sits in a comfortable range. C1 to G1 is where most 808 basslines live. And check your voicing: this patch should be mono, one note at a time, always.

The Pitch Envelope Click

A raw sine has no attack. The knock at the front of a real 808 comes from a fast pitch drop, not from a transient plugin.

In Serum 2, drag Env 2 onto Osc A’s coarse pitch. Then set the envelope: attack 0 ms, decay 60 ms, sustain 0. Set the modulation amount to +24 semitones. Now every note starts two octaves up and falls to pitch in 60 milliseconds. That fall is the knock.

Two dials to play with. Push the amount to +36 semitones for a harder, clickier attack. Stretch the decay toward 120 ms and the knock turns into a lazy, booming drop – great at 130-140 BPM trap tempos, muddy at faster ones.

This one modulation does more for punch than anything you could bolt on afterwards. Get it right before you touch an effect.

808 From Init in 6 Steps

Saturation Is What Phone Speakers Actually Play

A phone speaker physically cannot reproduce 40 Hz. What it can play are the harmonics at 80, 120, and 160 Hz – and your brain fills in the missing fundamental. So the job of distortion here isn’t aggression. It’s generating those harmonics.

In Serum 2 I load the Distortion effect and pick the Overdrive mode that shipped with version 2. Drive around 25%, mix at 50-70% so the clean sub stays underneath the grit. Serum 2 also lets you run this on its own FX bus, so the distortion never touches any layer you add later.

After the distortion, add a low-pass filter around 400 Hz to shave off the fizzy top end. The analog-style filter models are the right tool here – I covered which ones to reach for in our Serum 2 filters guide.

And know when to stop. Past 50% drive with a high mix you’re not making an 808 anymore, you’re doing bass design – fun, but that’s dubstep growl territory.

Quick reality check: switch your monitors to mono, turn the volume way down, and listen. If you can still follow the bassline quiet and small, it will survive a phone.

Glide Settings for 808 Slides

The sliding 808 is half the genre at this point. For a Serum 2 808 it’s three settings: Mono on, Legato on, Portamento around 100 ms.

Legato is the important one. With Legato on, the glide only triggers when notes overlap. So you control slides from the piano roll: overlap two notes and the 808 slides between them, leave a gap and it retriggers clean. One patch, both behaviors.

Match the glide time to the style. Quick trap slides between neighboring notes work at 60-100 ms. Drill slides that span an octave need 200-300 ms so the movement actually reads as a slide and not a chirp.

Tuning Your Serum 2 808 to the Key

An out-of-tune 808 makes the whole track feel wrong even when nobody can say why. In trap and drill the 808 is the bassline, so it has to sit on the root notes of your key, in tune.

First, verify the patch itself. Temporarily zero out the pitch envelope amount, play C1 against a tuner or a reference sine, and fix any drift with fine tune. A long pitch-click decay can pull the perceived pitch sharp, which is exactly why you tune with the click off.

Then pick your octave. Here’s the range I work in:

My rule: if your song key pushes the root below B0, play the octave up. A 29 Hz fundamental is a subwoofer flex, not a bassline anyone will hear on earbuds.

Sustain vs Decay: Trap vs Drill

The amp envelope decides the genre as much as the notes do.

Trap 808s bloom and die. Set Env 1 to attack 0, decay around 3 seconds, sustain 0%, release 300 ms. Each hit rings out and fades on its own, so short piano-roll notes still sound long. That’s the classic sustained boom under half-time hats at 140 BPM.

Drill 808s are held, not left to ring. Sustain up at 80-100%, decay shorter at around 1 second, release 150 ms. Now the note length in your piano roll controls everything – and drill patterns need that, because the constant wide slides only work when note ends are exact.

Layer a Click With the Sample Oscillator

Sometimes the pitch-envelope knock isn’t enough – you want a real drum transient glued on top. In Serum 1 you had to stack a sampler channel in your DAW. In Serum 2 the Sample engine handles it inside the patch.

Switch Osc B’s engine to Sample and drag in a short kick transient or a rimshot, anything under 100 ms. Turn keytracking off so the click stays at one pitch no matter what note you play. Blend it 12-15 dB under the sine. Done – the click fires on every note, and the glide still works because the sub layer handles all the pitch movement.

This is the single biggest workflow win of a Serum 2 808 over the old two-track layering approach: one patch, one MIDI clip, slides and click included.

What note should I tune my 808 to?

The root note of your song key, in the octave between C1 and A1. If the key forces the root lower than that, play it an octave up. Tune the patch itself first with the pitch click disabled, because the click skews what a tuner reads.

Why does my 808 disappear on phone speakers?

Because it’s a clean sine and phones can’t reproduce anything under roughly 100 Hz. Add saturation – Overdrive at 25% drive, 60% mix – so the harmonics carry the note, then low-pass at 400 Hz to keep it from getting fizzy. The harmonics are what small speakers actually play.

How do I make 808 slides in Serum 2?

Mono on, Legato on, Portamento at 100 ms. Then overlap notes in the piano roll wherever you want a slide. Notes with a gap between them retrigger normally, overlapped notes glide. Push portamento to 250 ms for long drill-style slides.

Do Serum 1 808 presets still work in Serum 2?
