I’ve built a few thousand Serum patches since 2022. The biggest speed jump didn’t come from a faster laptop or a new controller. It came from learning the Serum 2 shortcuts that Xfer never puts on the box.
Serum 2 looks like a knob-and-menu synth. It’s really a right-click-and-drag synth. Almost every control hides a context menu, a modifier key, or a drop target. Miss those and you’re doing everything the slow way.
Here’s the full list of shortcuts and hidden features I could verify and actually use every day. Nothing invented, no “I think this works” tricks.
The Right-Click Menu Is Half the Synth
If you only take one thing from this article: right-click everything. Knobs, sliders, oscillator panels, LFO tabs. Serum 2 puts a context menu on almost every control, and that menu is where the fast options live.
Right-click a knob and you get the modulation options for that parameter, plus MIDI learn. That means you never have to hunt through the mod matrix just to see what’s controlling a filter cutoff. The answer is one click away, on the knob itself.
Right-click in the oscillator section and you’ll find copy options for moving a whole oscillator setup to another slot. I use this constantly for layering: build a lead on osc A, copy it over, then detune the copy by -12 semitones and low-pass it. Instant width without rebuilding anything.

Modifier Keys Are the Real Serum 2 Shortcuts
Three modifier behaviors do most of the heavy lifting. Learn these and knob work stops being fiddly.
Shift-drag for fine control. Regular dragging is too coarse when detune needs to sit at 0.08 instead of 0.10. Hold shift while dragging and the knob moves in tiny increments. I use this on detune, filter cutoff, and FX mix knobs more than anything else.
Ctrl-click to reset (Cmd-click on Mac). One click snaps any control back to its default value. Way faster than trying to eyeball where zero was. Great for undoing a wild filter drive move without touching undo history.
Double-click to type a value. Double-click a control and a numeric entry box pops up. Want the LFO rate at exactly 1/16 or unison detune at 0.12? Type it. Heads up: this one is off for some controls until you enable popup text entry in the preferences, so if double-click does nothing for you, that’s why.

None of these Serum 2 shortcuts are secret, exactly. They’re in the manual. But I’ve watched producers with two years of Serum time click a knob forty times trying to land on a value they could have typed in two seconds.
Drag and Drop Does More Than You Think
Serum 2’s drag-and-drop system is the fastest part of the whole synth, and most people only use a third of it.
Drag a WAV onto an oscillator. Drop any .wav file straight onto an oscillator and Serum 2 turns it into a wavetable. A one-shot vocal chop, a kick tail, a synth stab from an old project. This is my favorite way to get wavetables nobody else has.
Drag modulation instead of using the matrix. Grab a mod source, drag it, and drop it on any knob. The routing is created instantly and you set the amount right there. For anything more complex, like scaling one mod source by another, the matrix still wins, and I cover that in my Serum 2 modulation guide.
Alt-drag an LFO tab to copy it. Hold alt, drag one LFO’s tab onto another, and the whole shape copies over. Perfect when you want the same wobble on two destinations but at different rates.
Resample to Oscillator. This one is a hidden feature more than a shortcut. It renders your current patch, effects included, into a brand new wavetable in an oscillator. Build a sound, resample it, then mangle the result with warp modes. Two or three passes of this and you’re in sound design territory no preset pack will ever reach.

The LFO Editor Has Its Own Click Language
The LFO shape editor is where Serum hides the most mouse tricks per square inch. If you draw custom shapes without these, you’re fighting the tool.
- Double-click on the grid adds a point. Double-click an existing point to remove it.
- Shift-click draws stepped shapes that snap to the grid. This is the fast way to build trance gates and rhythmic sidechain fakes. Set the grid to 16, shift-click a pattern, done in ten seconds.
- Alt-drag a point to snap it to the grid when you need exact timing.
- Alt-drag a curve handle to move every curve tension in the shape at once. Great for turning a hard gate into a smooth pump without editing eight handles one by one.
- Ctrl-drag (Cmd on Mac) to select multiple points and move them together.

My most-used combo: shift-click a 1/16 step pattern, then alt-drag one curve handle to round all the steps into a pump. That’s a full rhythmic gate in under thirty seconds.
Hidden Features Worth a Detour
The arp’s chord mode. Serum 2’s arpeggiator can run in Chord mode, where each step fires a full chord instead of a single note, shifting with the pattern. Hold one chord shape and you get moving harmonic stabs. It’s the cheapest way I know to make plucks sound arranged instead of programmed. The arp also stores up to 12 patterns you can switch between on the fly, and every step has its own note, length, velocity, and direction.
Multiple FX buses. Serum 1 forced every oscillator through one effects chain. Serum 2 gives you several buses, so the bass layer can stay dry and mono while the top layer swims in reverb. Most people still route everything through bus 1 out of habit. Splitting buses fixed more of my muddy patches than any EQ move. In our NextGen Serum presets almost every layered patch uses at least two buses for exactly this reason.
.SerumPack import. Installing presets used to mean digging through folders. Now you go to the Menu tab, hit Import Preset Pack, and point it at a .SerumPack file. Subfolders come along for the ride. Per-effect modulation. Every FX parameter is a modulation target now. LFO on reverb size, envelope on distortion drive. On basslines this is huge: I modulate Overdrive amount with note velocity so hard-played notes bite harder, a trick you’ll hear all over my favorite Serum 2 bass presets.
Serum 2 Shortcuts: Questions I Get a Lot
Is there an official list of Serum 2 shortcuts?
Yes, the manual covers the modifier keys and editor behaviors, and Xfer’s support page is the place to check when a behavior changes between versions. Shortcut details can shift in updates, so trust the manual for your installed version over old YouTube videos.
Do Serum 1 shortcuts still work in Serum 2?
Almost all of them. The core language of shift for fine control, ctrl or cmd to reset, double-click to type, and right-click for menus carried straight over. Your Serum 1 presets load too, so muscle memory and sound library both survive the upgrade. And the upgrade itself is free for Serum 1 owners.
Why doesn’t double-click value entry work for me?
Check the preferences. Popup numeric entry has a toggle, and on some installs it ships disabled. Flip it on and double-click starts working across the interface.
What’s the fastest way to actually learn these?
Pick three Serum 2 shortcuts and force yourself to use them for a week. I’d start with shift-drag, drag-and-drop modulation, and right-click menus. Those three cover about 80 percent of the time savings. Add the LFO editor tricks once shapes start feeling slow.
Speed Is a Sound Design Skill
None of these shortcuts make your patches better on their own. What they do is shrink the gap between hearing an idea and testing it. When trying a modulation route takes two seconds instead of twenty, you try ten times more ideas. That’s where better patches come from.
