A reese bass is two detuned saw waves beating against each other, filtered down, with a clean sine sub underneath. That’s the whole recipe. It has carried drum and bass since the late 80s and it works just as well in bass house today.
Here’s how I build one in Serum 2, with the actual detune numbers I use and the two mistakes that ruin most first attempts.
Why it growls
Kevin Saunderson recorded the original under his Reese alias in 1988. Jungle producers sampled it, pitched it down, and it became the default DnB bass.
The history matters less than the mechanism. Two oscillators slightly out of tune drift in and out of phase, and that drift creates a slow, chewing movement in the sound. You’re not adding movement with an LFO. The detune is the movement.
Old analog synths did this by accident because their oscillators never held perfect tune. Here’s that character on real Minimoog hardware, so you know what you’re aiming for.
The basic patch
- Init a patch and set oscillator A to a plain saw.
- Turn on oscillator B, also a saw.
- Detune B by +15 to +25 cents. Pull A down about -10 so they straddle the center pitch.
- Drop both oscillators an octave.
- Route them into a lowpass filter, cutoff around 300–800 Hz, resonance near zero.
- Hold a note around C1–E1 and listen for the slow phasing growl.
The total detune spread sets the speed of the growl, and this is the detail most tutorials skip. About 10 cents apart gives a slow, lazy wobble. Push past 40–50 cents and it turns choppy and seasick. For DnB I usually land between 20 and 35 cents total spread.
The other thing: detune speed changes with pitch. The same patch growls faster an octave up. If a reese feels dead on low notes, don’t add more detune first. Try playing it an octave higher and pitching the render down instead. That’s an old jungle trick and it still works.
Unison vs two oscillators
You can cheat with one oscillator, unison set to 2, and some detune. It works and it keeps things simple.
But two separate oscillators give you more to grab. Each one gets its own wavetable position, its own pan, its own level. When I built the reese patches for our Elixir pack, almost all of them used two oscillators instead of unison, because I could push oscillator B into a brighter wavetable frame and get extra snarl in the mids without touching the fundamental.
Here’s roughly where that ends up in a finished preset.
Keep the low end mono
This is mistake number one. Detuned saws below about 100 Hz don’t sound wide, they sound weak. The phasing that makes the mids growl makes the lows cancel, and on a club system in mono your bass just disappears.
The fix is a split:
- Highpass the detuned reese layer at 90–120 Hz.
- Add a third oscillator (or a separate patch) playing a plain sine one octave below, no detune, dead center.
- Keep everything under 150 Hz mono. Check the whole thing by summing your master to mono for a few seconds. If the weight drops, something in the low band is still stereo.
I check every bass patch we ship this way. It takes ten seconds and it has caught real problems more times than I want to admit.
Filter movement
A static reese gets boring across an eight-bar phrase. Three things I actually use:
- A slow LFO, around 4–8 bars long, moving cutoff by a small amount. Subtle, constant.
- A notch filter sweeping through the mids instead of a lowpass. This gives the hollow, vowel-ish DnB sound.
- Manual automation on cutoff per section. Verse dark, drop open. Boring to set up, works every time.
And the classic move: resample. Bounce eight bars of the raw patch to audio, then filter and distort the audio. DnB producers have worked this way for decades because processing a render behaves differently from processing a live synth, especially with distortion before the filter.

Width without losing the punch
Chorus is the traditional widener, but put it after the highpass split so it only touches the mids. I keep the rate slow and the mix under 50 percent. Past that it smears the growl you spent all this time tuning. It’s the one setting I check on every reese I ship across all my Serum 2 preset packs, because over-chorused mids are the most common way a good bass goes soft.
For a wider, more modern take, some producers stack a detuned mid layer the way future bass does it. Different genre, same physics.
