Melodic Techno lives and dies by its sound palette — dark emotional power: cinematic pads, arpeggiated basslines and leads that cut through fog. It has techno’s tempo and drum weight, but the harmony of something far more romantic.

I design Serum 2 packs for a living. Melodic techno is the genre where I spend the most time on slow modulation, because the sounds are held for a long time and anything static gets exposed immediately.

Below I break down the arp bass, the pads, the leads and the textures, then tempo, arrangement, mixing and the mistakes that keep melodic techno tracks feeling small.

The sound, part by part

Arpeggiated bass

This is the engine of the genre. A saw or a hollow wavetable, mono, unison off, decay around 200 ms with low sustain, run through Serum 2’s arpeggiator at eighths or sixteenths.

Add a resonant low-pass around 400 Hz and modulate the cutoff with an LFO cycling once per four bars. The arp pattern stays the same for a minute at a time; the filter is what makes it feel like it is going somewhere.

Keep a separate clean sine sub underneath playing whole notes. The arp carries the movement, the sine carries the weight.

Cinematic pads

Attack of 2 to 4 seconds, release of 4 or more, unison of 5 to 7 with detune around 20–25%, low-pass parked dark at 2–3 kHz.

Then layer something inharmonic on top — filtered noise, a granular or spectral oscillator, a metallic wavetable at low volume. That layer is what makes a pad sound cinematic instead of like a string preset. Choosing between the oscillator modes is covered in the oscillator guide.

Reverb should be long, 6 seconds or more, with the return high-passed at 300 Hz so it does not fog the low mids.

Leads

Melodic techno leads are narrow and piercing rather than wide. Two voices, minimal detune, a band-pass filter around 1–2 kHz, and a long synced delay.

Play four or five notes across eight bars. The restraint is what makes it cut through — a busy lead in this genre just adds to the fog.

Textures and FX

Risers, reverse hits and noise sweeps do the transitional work. Build them from filtered noise with a slow envelope and a long reverb, then reverse the render. There is more on pad and atmosphere layering in the atmospheres guide, and most of it transfers directly.

Tempo, groove and arrangement

Melodic techno sits at 122–126 BPM. Slower than peak-time techno on purpose — the harmony needs room.

Energy comes from layering and filtering across long spans. Sixteen-bar sections minimum, thirty-two more often. The peak is usually a breakdown, not a drop: everything drops out except the pad and lead, then the kick returns.

One arrangement habit that works: automate filter cutoff over sixteen bars instead of eight. This genre rewards patience more than almost any other, and short automation makes it sound like house at the wrong tempo. Mixing notes for melodic techno

Mono below 150 Hz. The kick and sub have to be solid because everything above them is very wide.

Sidechain the pads, the sub and the reverb returns to the kick with a medium 80–120 ms release. The breathing motion is part of the genre’s hypnotic feel.

Carve 250–500 Hz aggressively on the pads. With long attacks and heavy unison, that band builds up faster than you expect.

High-pass every reverb and delay return around 300 Hz. Long tails in the low mids are the main reason melodic techno mixes turn to mush.

Loudness comes from a clipped drum bus and a disciplined sub, not from the master limiter. These tracks should keep their dynamics.

Common mistakes

Static pads. If nothing moves, a thirty-two bar section feels endless. Slow LFO on cutoff, always.

Melody that is too busy. Four notes that repeat beat six notes that wander. Simplify.

Weak low end under all the atmosphere. A clean sine sub under everything fixes most complaints about tracks sounding small.

Rushing the arrangement. If the lead arrives before two minutes, you have written melodic house with a techno kick.

FAQ

Do these presets work in Serum 1?

No — they use the Serum 2 engine. Serum 2 is a free update for existing Serum owners, so Serum 1 buyers already have it.

Are the presets really royalty-free?

Yes. Releases, client work, beats for sale — no credit required. You cannot resell the presets themselves.

Can I use them in any DAW?

Any DAW that hosts Serum 2 as VST3 or AU: Ableton, FL Studio, Logic, Cubase, Studio One and the rest. Serum 2 runs natively on Apple Silicon.

What key works best for melodic techno?

Minor keys, most often A minor, F minor and C minor. Harmonic minor scales show up constantly because the raised seventh gives that slightly Eastern tension the genre is known for.

My track has great sounds but feels like it never goes anywhere — why?

Usually because every element enters at once and nothing is removed later. Take your finished loop, mute two elements for the first sixty seconds, and bring them back one at a time. Also check that at least one filter is moving continuously — if all automation is stepped at section boundaries, the middle of each section will feel dead.
