Peak Time Techno is the 1am sound: a kick that never lets up, a bass locked to the offbeat, and a lead that arrives like someone flipped a light switch. It is built for a big room and a loud PA, so the palette is narrow — but every sound in it has to be enormous.
Reference points: Adam Beyer, UMEK, Space 92. Tempo sits at 130–136 BPM. The arrangements are simple on purpose. The work is in the sound design and in the timing of what enters when.
Below is how I build the four sounds that carry a peak time record in Serum 2, plus the mix moves that make them translate on a club rig.

The sound, part by part
Offbeat bass
Start with a single saw or a plain analogue-style wavetable. One oscillator, unison 1 or 2, detune under 5. Peak time bass is mono and tight. Width down here is the enemy.
Put a lowpass on it and set the cutoff dark — most of the character lives under 300 Hz. Then route a short envelope to cutoff: attack 0, decay around 120–200 ms, sustain low. That gives you the pluck at the front of every offbeat note without letting the tail smear into the next kick.
Note length is the real trick. Write eighth notes on the offbeat, then shorten each one to roughly 60–70 percent of the grid. Add a little drive in the FX rack and roll the top off after it. Stabs
Stabs are where peak time gets its aggression. Take a saw, add a second oscillator a fifth or an octave up, and run both into a bandpass with resonance up around 40 percent. Envelope to cutoff again, but faster — decay near 80 ms.
Then modulate. A slow LFO on cutoff, plus a small amount on wavetable position, keeps the stab from being identical on every hit. Chords are usually minor triads or just root and fifth. Two notes read better on a big system than four.
Lead
The lead is the hook, and often the only melodic element in the whole track. Supersaw territory: unison 5 to 7 voices, detune around 20–30 percent, blend near the top. Add a second oscillator an octave below at low volume to anchor the pitch.
Keep the lead above 400 Hz so it never fights the bass. A highpass at 250 Hz on the lead channel is normal here. The supersaw breakdown covers unison and detune in more depth if you want to build one from an init patch.

Noise and risers
Use Serum 2’s noise oscillator rather than a sample. Feed it into a bandpass and automate the cutoff upward across 8 or 16 bars. Add a long reverb, then automate the filter on the reverb return too. That is most of every riser in this genre.
Tempo, groove and arrangement
130–136 BPM. Below 130 the energy starts reading as tech house. Above 138 you are in hard techno and the bass design changes completely.
The groove is straight. No swing, or almost none — 2 percent at most. The push comes from the offbeat bass and from percussion sitting slightly late, not from quantise settings.
One arrangement habit that works: build the whole thing as a loop first, then subtract. Get the drop sounding right with everything playing, then make the intro and the breakdown by removing parts rather than by writing new ones. Peak time tracks usually run 6–8 minutes with one main breakdown near the middle and a shorter second drop at the end for DJs to mix out of.
One hook, one riff. If you have two ideas, you have two tracks.
Mixing notes for peak time techno
Everything below 120 Hz stays mono. Kick and bass share that space and any stereo information down there collapses on a club rig.
Sidechain the bass to the kick with a short release — 60 to 90 ms. The bass should duck and return inside the same eighth note, not pump across the bar.
Carve the leads and stabs. A wide, gentle cut around 200–400 Hz on both leaves room for the kick body and keeps the midrange from clogging.
The loudness comes from the kick and bass, not from the master limiter. If the track only feels big after limiting, the low end is not tight enough. Check the mix around -14 LUFS and see whether it still hits.
Common mistakes
Too many elements. Beginners add a pad, a counter melody and a second bass. Peak time is kick, bass, one hook, percussion, noise. Remove until it hurts, then remove one more thing.
Bass tail too long. If the offbeat bass rings past the next kick, the low end turns to mush. Shorten the MIDI note, not just the release.
Detuning the bass. Unison on a peak time bass makes it wide and weak. Save detune for the lead.
Only mixing quietly. This music is built for loud playback. Check it loud once on the biggest speakers you can get to.

Do these presets work in Serum 1?
No. They use the Serum 2 engine. Serum 2 is a free update for anyone who owns Serum 1, so it is usually a five-minute fix.
Are the presets really royalty-free?
Yes. Releases, client work, tracks you sell — no credit required. The only thing you cannot do is resell the presets themselves.
Can I use them in any DAW?
Any DAW that hosts Serum 2 as VST3 or AU: Ableton, FL Studio, Logic, Cubase, Studio One, Bitwig.
What BPM should peak time techno be?
130–136 BPM covers almost everything released in the style. 132 is a safe middle if you are unsure.
My bass disappears whenever the kick hits — what is wrong?
Usually the sidechain release is too long, or the kick and bass both carry energy around 50–60 Hz. Shorten the release under 90 ms first, then move the bass note away from the kick’s fundamental pitch.
