I wrote the first version of this guide back in 2022, and honestly, it was thin. So here’s the full 2026 rewrite: everything I actually do to keep my mixes clean, with real numbers you can copy into your own sessions.

One thing up front: a clean mix isn’t made by one magic plugin. It’s a chain of small decisions — sound choice, levels, EQ, compression, space. Get each one roughly right and the mix mostly cleans itself up.

Clean starts before the mix

The biggest mixing mistake isn’t a mixing mistake at all. It’s picking sounds that fight each other and then trying to fix the mess with EQ.

Before you touch a single fader, listen to your sounds together. If two synths cover the same frequency range and play at the same time, one of them has to change — different octave, different patch, or it’s gone. Fewer, better layers always beat a wall of average ones.

Source quality matters just as much. A well-designed preset already has the low end filtered and the harshness tamed, so there’s less to fix later. That’s basically why I make presets for a living. Same logic for drums: clean samples need almost no processing. Something like Drums Utopia Vol.1 is already balanced, so you’re mixing, not rescuing.

Gain staging: the boring step that fixes everything

Most muddy, harsh mixes are just too hot. Digital clipping inside plugin chains adds distortion you can’t un-hear, and a slammed master bus glues everything into a smear.

My routine:

  • Aim each track’s average level around -18 dBFS, peaks around -10. That’s where most plugins that model analog gear behave best.
  • Start your mix with every fader down, bring in the most important element first (usually kick or vocal), then balance everything against it.
  • Leave about 6 dB of headroom on the master. No limiter on the master while you mix.

Do just this and your mix will already sound cleaner than 80% of demos I get sent.

EQ: cut before you boost

EQ is where clean mixes are made or lost. The rule that changed my mixes: cut narrow, boost wide — and cut first.

  • High-pass almost everything. Pads, hats, guitars, vocals — roll off below 80–120 Hz. None of that low rumble is musical, it just eats headroom. Only kick and bass get to keep the sub range.
  • Mud lives at 200–400 Hz. If the mix sounds thick and cloudy, sweep a narrow cut through this range on your busiest tracks. Usually 2–4 dB out of two or three tracks is enough.
  • Boxiness sits at 400–600 Hz, harshness at 2–5 kHz. Same trick: narrow cut, sweep, find the ugly spot, take out a few dB.
  • One sound per zone. Decide what owns the sub, the low mids, the top. Everything else gets carved out of that zone.

The kick vs. bass fight deserves its own sentence: pick which one owns 40–60 Hz, cut the other one there by 3–4 dB, or sidechain the bass to the kick. That single move un-muddies more low ends than any “mastering chain.”

By the way, a lot of this shaping can happen inside the synth instead of on the channel. Compression: control, don’t crush

Compression evens out levels so quiet details stay audible and loud peaks stop poking out. Used gently, it cleans a mix. Used hard, it does the opposite — pumping, dullness, noise pulled up between notes.

Starting points that work on most material:

  • Ratio 2:1 to 4:1.
  • Attack 10–30 ms so transients punch through. Fast attack (under 5 ms) flattens drums — only do it on purpose.
  • Release around 100 ms, or auto if the compressor has it.
  • Aim for 2–4 dB of gain reduction on the loudest parts. If the meter shows 10 dB, back off the threshold.

If one compressor isn’t enough, use two doing 2–3 dB each instead of one doing 6. Serial compression sounds smoother and stays transparent.

Reverb and delay: space without the wash

Reverb makes things bigger, but it’s also the fastest way to drown a mix. Three habits keep it clean:

  • Use sends, not inserts. One or two shared reverbs glue the mix and are easy to control. A different reverb on every track is chaos.
  • EQ the reverb return. High-pass it around 300–400 Hz, low-pass around 8 kHz. Low-frequency reverb is pure mud; you’ll never miss it.
  • Set 20–40 ms of pre-delay. The dry transient lands first, then the tail. The sound stays upfront and clear even with a decent amount of reverb.

Delay is often the cleaner choice: a tempo-synced 1/4 or 1/8 delay with feedback around 20–30% adds depth without a constant tail. Duck the delay with a sidechain compressor keyed from the dry signal and it only blooms in the gaps.

Panning and the mono check

Width is free separation. Keep kick, bass, snare and lead vocal in the center. Pan supporting parts out: doubled guitars hard left and right, hats and percussion at 30–50%, pads wide.

Two rules keep it clean:

  1. If two sounds mask each other, pan them apart before you reach for EQ. Opposite sides, problem gone.
  2. Check the mix in mono once per session. Phones, club systems and Bluetooth speakers collapse stereo all the time — if something vanishes in mono, fix the phase or the widener, not the volume.

Check your mix on more than one system

A mix that’s only clean on your headphones isn’t clean. Before I call anything done, it goes through studio monitors at low volume, cheap earbuds, a phone speaker and a car. Each one exposes something different: the phone shows if the melody survives without sub, the car shows low-mid buildup, low-volume monitoring shows the real balance.

Low volume is the secret weapon here. If the mix sounds balanced when it’s quiet, it’ll sound great when it’s loud. The reverse is never true.

FAQ: getting a clean sound

Why does my mix sound muddy?

Almost always: too much energy at 200–400 Hz plus un-filtered low end on tracks that don’t need it. High-pass everything except kick and bass, then sweep a narrow EQ cut through the low mids on your fullest tracks. That fixes most mud in ten minutes.

Should I EQ before or after compression?

Cut problem frequencies before the compressor, so it doesn’t react to rumble or mud you were going to remove anyway. Tonal boosts sound smoother after compression. EQ → compressor → EQ is a completely normal chain.

Do I need expensive plugins for a clean mix?

No. Stock EQs and compressors in any modern DAW are transparent and more than good enough. Clean mixes come from gain staging, cuts and arrangement decisions — not from a $300 emulation of a 1970s console.

How loud should my master be while mixing?

Keep about 6 dB of headroom and don’t put a limiter on the master until the mix is finished. Loudness is a mastering decision. If you push for volume while mixing, you’ll make balance decisions based on distortion, not on the actual mix.
