No, Serum 2 is not free. It costs $249 from Xfer Records, and there is no free version. But there are three legal ways to pay less or nothing: it’s a free upgrade if you already own Serum 1, there’s a demo you can try first, and you can spread the cost with rent-to-own on Splice. The presets, on the other hand, can be free, and I’ll show you where.
I make Serum presets for a living at Monosounds, so I get the “is Serum 2 free?” question in my inbox a lot. Here is the straight answer, checked against Xfer’s and Splice’s own pages in October 2026.
How much does Serum 2 cost?
Serum 2 sells for $249 on xferrecords.com. It launched in March 2025 at an intro price of $189, which ended on June 1, 2025. Since then it has stayed at $249. Xfer rarely runs sales, and in Black Friday 2025 the price didn’t move.
What you get for that: one license, free updates for life, Mac and Windows, VST3, AU and AAX. No subscription and no paid “pro” tier. I keep a page on Serum 2 Black Friday deals that I update if Xfer ever announces a discount.
Is Serum 2 free if you own Serum 1?
Yes. This is the one case where Serum 2 really is free. If you bought Serum 1 from Xfer or from a reseller, log in to your Xfer account and download the Serum 2 installer. No upgrade fee.
It also applies if you rented Serum 1 through Splice rent-to-own. According to Splice, Serum 2 shows up in the Apps & Plugins section of your Splice account while you’re still paying, and once the lease is finished you own both Serum and Serum 2.
Serum 2 installs as a separate plugin, so Serum 1 stays on your computer and old projects open as before. Your Serum 1 presets load in Serum 2 too. My Serum 1 vs Serum 2 comparison covers what changed.
Is there a Serum 2 demo or free trial?
There are two ways to try it before paying.
- The Xfer demo. Xfer has a demo for Mac and Windows. It’s the full synth with a time limit of 15 minutes per session, so you reopen it to keep going. It’s for testing, not for finishing tracks.
- The Splice trial. If you start rent-to-own on Splice, the first 3 days are a free trial.
My advice for the demo: load a few presets in the genre you make before you start tweaking knobs. Fifteen minutes goes fast, and hearing finished sounds tells you more about the synth than the init patch does. Our free Serum 2 presets work fine for that.
Serum 2 rent-to-own: $9.99 a month
Splice sells Serum 2 as rent-to-own at $9.99 a month for 25 months, about $250 in total. There’s no interest, so you pay roughly the same as buying outright, just spread out. After the last payment you get a lifetime license and the plugin is yours. You get the same full version as a direct purchase.
It’s the best route if $249 at once is the problem. It is not a way to save money.
What about “Serum 2 free download” and “Serum 2 key” sites?
If you search for a free Serum 2 download or a Serum 2 key, most of what you’ll find are cracked installers and key generators. I won’t link any of them, and I’d stay away for practical reasons, not only legal ones:
- Malware. Cracked plugin installers and “keygens” are one of the most common ways producers get infected. The installer asks for admin rights, which is exactly what malware needs. A stolen browser session or crypto wallet costs a lot more than $249.
- No updates. Serum 2 gets regular updates. A cracked copy stays on whatever version was cracked, and new presets that need the latest version won’t load.
- Broken sessions. When a crack stops working, every project that uses it stops opening properly.
The legal routes above cost less than you’d think: $0 for Serum 1 owners, $0 for the demo, $9.99 a month on Splice.
What’s actually free: Serum 2 presets
The synth costs money. Sounds for it don’t have to. We give away 35 free Serum 2 preset packs, over 700 presets in total, all royalty-free. Checkout is $0 with an email, no card.
The biggest one is Free Serum 2 Presets: 271 Patches: 95 basses, 45 leads, 36 keys, plus 808s, pianos, plucks, pads and atmospheres in 14 folders. Those are .fxp files, so they load in Serum 2 and in the original Serum. The smaller genre packs are in Serum 2’s own format and need Serum 2.

Free alternatives to Serum 2
If you don’t own Serum 1 and $249 isn’t in the budget, use Vital. It’s a free wavetable synth by Matt Tytel with three wavetable oscillators, a sample oscillator, drag-and-drop modulation and spectral warping. The free tier has the same engine as the paid tiers; paying gets you more presets and wavetables.
Vital covers most classic wavetable sounds: reese basses, supersaws, plucks, wobbles. What it doesn’t have is Serum 2’s sample, granular and spectral engines, the FX buses and the built-in sequencer. Presets don’t cross over either: Vital can’t open Serum presets. I compared them in detail in Serum 2 vs Vital.
A sensible path: learn on Vital, and buy Serum 2 when you hit a wall Vital can’t get past, or when a pack you really want only exists for Serum.
So, should you pay for Serum 2?
If you own Serum 1, the question is closed: download it, it’s free. If you don’t, try the demo with a few presets in your genre, and compare it with Vital for a week. If Serum 2 makes you finish more music, $249 once with free updates for life is a fair price for a synth you’ll use for years. If it doesn’t, Vital is a real alternative and costs nothing.
