Since Serum 2 shipped in March 2025, the serum 1 vs serum 2 question has landed in my inbox almost every week. Producers want to know what actually changed, whether their old presets break, and whether their laptop can take it.
I run Monosounds.studio. We’ve been making Serum preset packs since 2022, and I rebuilt our whole catalog for Serum 2 after launch. That meant hundreds of hours with both versions open side by side.
So here’s the honest breakdown. What changed, what didn’t, and the one group of producers who should wait before installing anything.
The Short Answer: It’s a Free Upgrade

On paper that reads like a new synth wearing the old one’s name. In practice it feels like Serum with the ceiling removed. The workflow is still Serum: same drag-to-modulate logic, same wavetable editor DNA, same visual feedback everywhere.
Three Oscillators, Five Engines Each
Serum 1 gave you two wavetable oscillators plus sub and noise. Serum 2 gives you three main oscillators, and each one switches between five engines: Wavetable, Sample, Multisample (SFZ), Granular, and Spectral.
That’s the single biggest change. Granular runs up to 256 grains, which turns any sample into an evolving texture. Spectral does resynthesis with partial-level editing, so you can morph between frames of a resynthesized sound. And Multisample means Serum 2 can act as a basic sampler for keys and guitar patches – material Serum 1 simply couldn’t hold.
My favorite everyday trick still works too: drag a .wav onto an oscillator and Serum builds a wavetable from it. And “Resample to Oscillator” now bakes your FX into a fresh table, which is how I make most of my growl basses.

Effects: One Chain vs Multiple Buses
Serum 1 had one FX chain. Every oscillator went through the same effects in the same order. Serum 2 has multiple FX buses, so you can send oscillator A through a distorted, mono bass bus while oscillator B floats through reverb on its own bus.
The FX list grew as well. There’s a Bode frequency shifter, three new reverb types, and an Overdrive distortion mode. And you can modulate parameters on every effect – LFO on reverb size, envelope on delay feedback, whatever you need.
For sound designers this is the sleeper feature. Half of what people call “sound design” is really FX routing, and buses mean you no longer bounce to another track just to split processing. I cover the whole rack in my Serum 2 effects guide.
Modulation, MPE, and the Built-In Sequencer
You get 4 envelopes now, all BPM-syncable, plus new LFO modes. Drag-and-drop modulation works the way it always did – grab a source, drop it on a knob – and the mod matrix and macros are still there for fine control.
MPE support is new. If you own a Roli or a LinnStrument, Serum 2 finally speaks your language: per-note pitch, slide, and pressure.
The arpeggiator and sequencer are also new. Per-step note, length, velocity, and direction, right inside the synth. For pluck and arp patches I used to program the pattern in the DAW. Now the patch carries its own movement, which means a single preset can ship as a playable idea, not just a tone.
Your Serum 1 Presets Still Load
This was my biggest worry in March 2025, and it turned out fine. Serum 1 presets load in Serum 2 as-is. Copy them into the Serum 2 presets folder and they show up. Subfolders work too.
New packs mostly ship as .SerumPack files now – one file, installed from the Menu tab via Import Preset Pack. Much cleaner than the old zip-and-copy routine.
So your library doesn’t reset to zero. It grows: everything you owned still works, plus everything new built for the five engines. Who Should Not Rush the Upgrade
Now the honest part, because this is where the serum 1 vs serum 2 decision gets real. Serum 2 is heavier than Serum 1 on some patches. Not all of them – a basic wavetable patch costs about the same – but granular patches, spectral resynthesis, big unison stacks, and multi-bus FX add up fast.
If you produce on an older machine – say a dual-core laptop from 2017 – hold off, or at least keep your sessions light. My rules after more than a year of daily use:
- Unison 3-7 already sounds huge. You almost never need 16 voices.
- Set oversampling to 2x. 4x is rarely audible in a full mix.
- Cap polyphony per patch – 8 voices covers most parts.
- Freeze or bounce synth tracks once the part is written.
- If the GUI glitches, set UseOpenGL=0 in Serum.cfg.

To be clear though: on any reasonably modern CPU – Apple silicon, or an Intel or AMD chip from the last five years – Serum 2 runs fine with sensible patch design.

Is Serum 2 really free for Serum 1 owners?
Yes. Free upgrade, lifetime free updates, no subscription. Log into your Xfer account and the Serum 2 download sits right there. New buyers pay once and future updates are covered too.
Do Serum 1 presets work in Serum 2?
Yes, they load directly. The reverse isn’t true – patches saved in Serum 2 won’t open in Serum 1, especially anything using the new engines or FX buses. So sort your saves accordingly if you keep both installed.
Can I keep Serum 1 installed after upgrading?
Yes, and I recommend it for a while. Serum 2 is a separate plugin, so old projects keep loading Serum 1 untouched. I ran both for about six months before retiring Serum 1 from my template.
Is Serum 2 worth it over Vital?
If you’re starting from zero and money is tight, Vital’s free tier covers classic wavetable synthesis well. Serum 2 wins on the sample, granular, and spectral engines, the FX buses, and a far bigger preset ecosystem. If you already own Serum 1, the question answers itself – the upgrade costs nothing.
So, Should You Upgrade?
For almost everyone: yes. It’s free, your presets carry over, your old projects stay safe, and you get three oscillators, five engines, and an FX section that used to require extra plugins. The only solid reason to wait is a genuinely old CPU.
