Here’s a problem I hear in most demos people send me: the drums are too loud, the bass fights the kick, the melody sits on top of the snare. Every element works on its own, but the mix sounds like separate parts stacked up instead of one record.
There’s a fix that takes one device and about two minutes: an SSL-style bus compressor on your mix bus. Producers call it glue compression, and once you hear what it does you’ll put it on almost every project.
Quick honesty check before we start. Bus compression won’t rescue a broken balance. If your kick is 6 dB too loud, turn it down first. But once the levels are roughly right, glue is what turns “a bunch of tracks” into “a track”.
What an SSL bus compressor actually is
The original is the center-section compressor from the SSL 4000-series consoles from the 80s. Engineers noticed that running the whole mix through it made everything sound tighter and more finished, so it ended up on a huge share of the records you grew up with.
Why it glues: it’s a fairly slow, program-dependent VCA compressor. It doesn’t grab individual hits. It gently rides the overall energy of the mix, so loud moments pull everything down together for a split second. Your ear reads that shared movement as “these sounds belong in the same room”.
You don’t need the hardware or even an official plugin. Any SSL-style bus compressor does the trick:
- Waves SSL G-Master Buss Compressor
- UAD SSL G Bus Compressor
- Cytomic The Glue (and Ableton’s stock Glue Compressor, which is built on it)
- Logic’s stock Compressor in Bus mode
- TDR Kotelnikov — free, not an SSL clone, but works fine for this job
The settings below translate to all of them.
The settings: exact numbers to start from

- Attack: 30 ms. Slow on purpose. It lets your kick and snare transients pass through untouched before the compressor clamps down. Faster attack = softer, duller drums.
- Release: fastest setting, or Auto. On the classic SSL that’s 0.1 s. You want the compressor to recover before the next hit so the mix breathes with the groove instead of staying squashed. Auto release is great here because it adapts to the material.
- Ratio: 2:1. Gentle. We’re gluing, not smashing.
- Threshold: pull it down until you see 2–3 dB of gain reduction on the loudest sections of the track. The needle should bounce with the beat and come back to zero in the gaps.
- Makeup gain: add back roughly what you took off (2–3 dB) so the bypassed and active versions are the same loudness.
That last step matters more than people think. Louder always sounds “better” to the ear, so if you don’t match levels, your before/after test is lying to you. Match the loudness, then toggle bypass. The compressed version should sound fuller and more together — not just louder.
One modern extra: if your plugin has a sidechain high-pass filter, set it around 60–90 Hz. That stops the kick and 808 from pumping the whole mix on every hit. The hardware didn’t have this; almost every current plugin does, and it’s the single biggest upgrade to the classic recipe. Try the same trick on the drum bus
Once the mix bus version clicks, route all your drums to one group and glue that too. Drums take more compression happily, so change the recipe a little: ratio 4:1, attack 10–30 ms depending on how much snap you want to keep, release fast, and push for 3–4 dB of gain reduction. The kit starts to move as one instrument instead of separate samples.

A loop like that already sits together because it was processed as a group. That’s the target sound when you glue your own drum bus.
Common mistakes with glue compression
Too much gain reduction. Past 3–4 dB on the mix bus, glue turns into pumping. If you want it louder, that’s a limiter’s job at the very end of the chain, not the bus compressor’s.
Using it to fix balance. A bus compressor evens out moments in time, not levels between instruments. Loud snare stays a loud snare. Fix the faders first.
Adding it last. If you know the track will be mixed into a bus compressor, put it on early and mix through it. Every fader move then reacts the way the finished record will. Slapping it on after everything is balanced changes decisions you already made.
Fixing at the mix what should be fixed in the sound. A lot of “my mix won’t glue” problems are really sound-choice problems — thin presets that only exist in one narrow frequency band. FAQ: SSL glue compression
How much gain reduction should I use on the mix bus?
2–3 dB on the loudest sections, with the needle returning to zero between phrases. That’s the sweet spot on the classic SSL curve. More than that and you’ll hear the mix pumping; less than 1 dB and the compressor is barely doing anything.
Should I mix into the bus compressor from the start?
If you already know you’ll use one — yes. Insert it early with the settings above and make your balance decisions through it. You’ll compensate for its behavior naturally as you mix, instead of getting surprised at the end.
What’s the difference between glue compression and limiting?
Glue compression is gentle (2:1, a few dB) and shapes how the mix moves; it’s a mixing tool. Limiting is aggressive gain reduction to raise loudness at the very end; it’s a mastering tool. You’ll often use both, but they do different jobs and the limiter goes last.
Do I need a real SSL plugin, or is my stock compressor fine?
Stock is fine. Ableton’s Glue Compressor is literally an SSL-style design, Logic’s Compressor has a Bus mode, and FL Studio users can get very close with any VCA-style compressor at 2:1 with a 30 ms attack. The recipe matters more than the brand.
