At first glance the circle of fifths reads like the page of a theory textbook you’d happily flip past. In reality, few tools earn their keep like this one does. I still peek at it whenever I’m sketching progressions for demo tracks or MIDI packs.
Spend ten minutes with it and you’ll be able to name every chord that fits your key, shift keys without the track collapsing, and understand why certain progressions feel like they couldn’t have gone any other way. Nobody’s asking for a music degree here.
What the circle of fifths actually is
Imagine a clock with 12 positions, each one a key. C major takes the 12 o’clock spot. Move clockwise and every step climbs a perfect fifth: C, G, D, A, E, B, F# (or Gb), Db, Ab, Eb, Bb, F, then back around to C.
One sharp gets added to the key signature with every clockwise step; one flat with every counterclockwise step. C major carries none, G major carries a single sharp, F major a single flat. That’s literally the entire system.
You’ll usually see an inner ring on the diagram too, holding the relative minors. A minor lives inside C major because the two keys use the identical seven notes; they simply call a different one home.
Now the payoff: neighboring keys on the circle have six of their seven notes in common. Which explains why C and G sound like family while C and F# sound like strangers from another planet. Circle distance is sonic distance.
How to find every chord in your key
I genuinely wish someone had handed me this trick years earlier. Locate your key on the circle, then:
- Grab the key plus the two positions beside it. For C major that means C, F and G, your major chords (I, IV and V).
- From the inner ring, grab the relative minors sitting under those same three spots: Am, Dm and Em (vi, ii and iii).
One glance, six chords. And that half-dozen accounts for an enormous slice of popular music. All of it packed into a small cluster hugging your key.
Progressions worth stealing
Got your six? Run these next (numbers given in C major):
- I–V–vi–IV (C–G–Am–F): pop’s workhorse. It’s carried thousands of hits.
- vi–IV–I–V (Am–F–C–G): identical chords, but opening on the minor, and the mood darkens immediately.
- ii–V–I (Dm–G–C): jazz’s signature move. Look at the circle and you’ll spot that Dm, G and C sit in a row going counterclockwise: a little circle-of-fifths sequence in miniature.
- I–IV–V (C–F–G): blues and rock stripped to the bone.
Triads aren’t the ceiling. Trade Dm for Dm7, or G for G7, and the gravity toward C only intensifies. A seventh is the cheapest emotional upgrade there is.
Transposing and changing key without pain
Transposing a whole song
Suppose the topline sits out of the singer’s range and the track needs to come down from C to A. Locate both keys on the circle, count the steps separating them, then shift every chord by exactly that interval. C turns into A, F into D, G into E, Am into F#m. The chords keep the same relationships to each other; only the anchor moves. Inside a DAW it’s trivial: select all the MIDI, drag down three semitones. Still, knowing the circle means knowing what the new chords are actually called, which suddenly matters when a vocalist or guitarist wants to know.
Modulation that doesn’t sound clumsy
- Move to a neighbor. Adjacent keys differ by one note, which is why going from C to G lands smoothly, almost without the listener noticing.
- Slide to the relative minor. Trading C major for A minor costs you nothing. Identical notes, different emotional weather. Perfect for a bridge that needs shadow.
- The final-chorus lift. Up a whole step (C to D, two clockwise steps) is cheesy, yes, but it’s the classic last-chorus key change because it works.
- Chain fifths. Walk counterclockwise (Em–Am–Dm–G–C, say) and you get that tumbling-forward momentum you know from “Fly Me to the Moon” or “I Will Survive”. Chord after chord resolving into the next like a row of dominoes.
A real example: “Let It Be”
Take the Beatles’ “Let It Be”: key of C major, verse cycling C–G–Am–F. That’s the I–V–vi–IV from the list above.
Now put those four chords on the circle. F, C and G occupy three consecutive spots, and Am is C’s relative minor, tucked right inside the cluster. Every single chord sits as near to home as possible. A big reason the song feels that grounded and easy to sing.
- Verse: C–G–Am–F–C–G–F–C
- Chorus: Am–G–F–C, then F–C–G–F–C
Zero exotic harmony, zero borrowed chords. Just the six-chord neighborhood handled with taste. This is what people actually mean when they say the circle of fifths helps you write beautiful songs — it won’t compose anything for you, but it points out which doors are within reach.
Using the circle in your DAW
My routine when a track starts from nothing:
- Choose a key, then switch on scale highlighting (or fold to scale) in the piano roll.
- Rough out one of the progressions above using plain held chords.
- Once the progression sits right, and only then, start auditioning sounds and adding rhythm.

FAQ: circle of fifths
Do I need to memorize the circle of fifths?
Nope. Pin a picture of it beside your desk or park it on a second monitor. Analyze a couple of songs a week against it and the neighborhoods will lodge themselves in your head within a month or two. Drilling it like flashcards is actually the slower route.
Does the circle of fifths work for minor keys?
It does. That inner ring is the minor circle, and every rule carries over. A minor’s nearest allies are Dm and Em, joined by C, F and G from the outer ring: the identical six-chord cluster, just approached from the minor side.
What’s the difference between the circle of fifths and the circle of fourths?
Same circle, opposite reading direction. Clockwise steps rise by fifths; counterclockwise steps rise by fourths. Jazz musicians tend to think in fourths since ii–V–I motion travels that way.
Is the circle of fifths useful for electronic music and beats?
