Ten minutes a day, and you’ll notice something within two weeks: broad ranges — low mud, boxiness, harshness, air — start having names. Around one to two months you can name octave-ish bands fairly reliably and hear obvious compression. The subtle stuff — narrow Q, attack and release, reverb tails, small stereo moves — takes several months of the same habit.
Those are rules of thumb, not measurements. Some people are quicker, plenty are slower, everyone plateaus somewhere. But the shape of the curve is consistent enough to plan around.
A rough timeline
Assume ten to fifteen focused minutes a day, on one pair of headphones.

The last row gets underrated. The skill isn’t only accuracy, it’s how long you take to get there. Being right in four seconds instead of forty is what makes it usable mid-session.
The first sessions: you find out you’re worse than you thought
Expect your first scores to be bad, and expect that to sting a bit.
Most producers assume they hear more than they do, because they’ve listened to music their whole lives. Listening and identifying are different skills. The first honest quiz separates them, and it isn’t flattering.
That’s useful, not discouraging. A wrong answer with feedback attached teaches you more than an hour of confident guessing in a session where nobody tells you the thing you called "warmth" was 250 Hz.
Two weeks: broad ranges start having names
After about two weeks of short daily sessions, you can usually put a rough label on a big boost.
Not a number — a neighbourhood. Muddy down low. Boxy in the low mids. Harsh in the upper mids. Air on top, or none. Those four words cover a lot of mixing conversations, and using them accurately is the first real return on the time.
What still won’t work: cuts, narrow bells, and anything below a few dB of gain. That’s normal. Boosts are events, cuts are absences, and absences are quieter. Our walkthrough of how to identify frequencies by ear goes through the bands and what to listen for in each.
One to two months: bands and obvious compression
Around the one to two month mark, octave-wide bands become reliable on material you haven’t heard before, and heavy compression becomes obvious.
Two things change. First, transfer: you stop needing the familiar test loop and hear the same band on a vocal, a kick and a pad. Second, dynamics arrive — not attack times yet, just "squashed" versus "not" at matched level.
This is also the point where the order you trained in starts to pay. If you skipped loudness at the start, you’ll find your compression answers are unstable, because you’re partly judging output gain.
Several months: the subtle layer
Narrow Q, attack and release, reverb predelay and tail, and small stereo moves come after several months, and never as suddenly as the earlier stuff.
There’s no single week when release times click. Pumping and breathing gradually become something you notice rather than something you look for. Same with predelay: at first every reverb is just "reverb", then one day a vocal sits forward and you know why.

What makes it faster
Four things, in rough order of impact.
- Daily and short. Ten minutes six days a week beats an hour once. Ear fatigue is real and sneaky — after twenty minutes you’re still answering, just worse, and you’re training your ears to be wrong.
- One set of headphones. You’re learning what a band sounds like through a particular system. Change the system and part of that learning resets. Pick one, stay with it for a few months, add a second reference later.
- Level-matched A/B. Always. Louder sounds better, so any comparison at mismatched level teaches you the wrong lesson with total confidence.
- Train on material like what you make. Pink noise is efficient for first attaching names to bands, but it transfers poorly on its own. If you make electronic music, drill on synths, drums and full mixes — bounce loops from a free Serum 2 preset pack if you need source material, or use a bundle you already own.
What stalls people
The usual four, and the last one is the sneakiest.
- Long sessions, rarely. Two hours every other weekend builds almost nothing. The gains come from frequent light contact, not volume.
- Switching monitoring. New headphones every few months, laptop speakers one day and IEMs the next. You keep restarting the same lesson.
- Training one skill forever. Frequency identification is the fun one and the easy one to measure, so people stay there for a year. Meanwhile they still can’t spot compression, can’t hear a predelay, and can’t tell what a mix needs. If you’re stuck, the fix is usually a different skill, not a harder level of the same one — we lay out an order in what to train and when for mixing.
- Mistaking a score for skill. The one that quietly wastes months.
Why a rising score isn’t the same as a better ear
A score tells you how you did on that quiz format. It doesn’t tell you that anything transferred to your sessions.
This is a fair criticism of gamified trainers generally, ours included. A user on SoundGym’s own public feedback thread put it bluntly:

Their team replied defending the gamified design, and both sides have a point. A scoreboard is a great motivator and a poor teacher.
Two ways to keep yourself honest. Vary the format, so you’re not learning the quiz — multiple choice, matching a slider, ABX, ranking clips and open-ended "what would you fix" questions all test different things, which is why our trainer (ours, so weigh that) mixes six of them. And check transfer directly: open one of your own old mixes and see whether you can say what’s wrong with it in one sentence.
Be sceptical of accuracy stats that reward grinding, too. If retrying a level until you pass counts the same as getting it first time, the number goes up while your ear stands still.
How to tell it’s actually working
The tell is simple: you reach for a plugin with a target already in mind, instead of sweeping a boost around to find the problem.
Before training, the workflow is search: big boost, sweep, listen for the ugly spot, back it off. After, you hear the boxiness, guess 400 Hz, open the EQ there and you’re within half an octave. The sweep becomes confirmation rather than exploration.
Other signs, in roughly the order they appear:
- You describe problems in words other people understand instead of "it sounds off".
- You start noticing things in commercial releases — a hard-clipped snare, a wide pad that’s obviously mono-summed.
- You undo more. Hearing better means catching your own bad moves faster.
- You stop trusting a change until it’s level-matched, without being reminded.
Does ear training actually work?
Yes, for the specific thing it does: connecting a sound to a name fast enough to act on it. It doesn’t make you a better mixer by itself.
Taste, arrangement, knowing when the part is wrong rather than the EQ — none of that comes from a quiz. A trainer removes the guessing step so your taste acts on accurate information. Smaller claim than the marketing usually makes, and still worth ten minutes a day.

Can you train your ears if you’re over 30 or 40?
Yes. Ear training is pattern recognition and vocabulary, not raw hearing acuity — you’re learning to attach names to sounds you can already hear. Plenty of engineers develop their sharpest listening well into their careers. Train within the range you actually work in and judge yourself against your own earlier results, not someone else’s leaderboard.
Does ear training transfer to real mixing?
Partly, and only if you push it. Quiz accuracy on a familiar test loop can rise without changing anything in your sessions, so vary the material and the answer format, and use open-ended "what would you fix" exercises rather than only multiple choice. The real test is whether you now open an EQ with a target frequency in mind instead of sweeping to find one.
Why is my score improving but my mixes aren’t?
Usually because you’re training one skill and measuring it repeatedly. Frequency identification is the easiest to score, so people stay there while compression, reverb, stereo and diagnosis go untrained. Rotate skills, and check whether you can hear the same band on unfamiliar material rather than on your usual test loop.
Is it too late to start if I’ve mixed for years without training?
No, and experienced mixers often move faster because they already know what the words mean. What usually happens is a rough first week, because years of mixing build confidence that a blind quiz doesn’t respect. After that the vocabulary you already have attaches to sounds quickly.
