A strong pad preset is often what separates a demo from a finished record. Nobody consciously hears the pad until you mute it and the whole track falls apart. Yet the same layer, done badly, is the quickest route to a foggy mix.
This guide walks through how pads actually get built in Xfer Serum 2: the slow envelopes, the modulation that stops them sitting still, the filtering that keeps them from eating the mix. I'm also handing out 15 presets, so instead of staring at an init patch you start from something professional.
Every good pad does two things. It keeps moving, and it stays away from the low end.

The sound, part by part
The warm analogue pad
Two saw oscillators, the second sitting 5–8 cents off the first. Unison at 3 to 4 voices per oscillator, detune near 0.15. A 24 dB low-pass parked at 1.5–3 kHz.
On the amp envelope: attack somewhere in 300–800 ms, release 1 to 2 seconds. Push the attack slower and the pad fades in instead of sounding played, which is lovely for ambient and wrong for house.
Now add one slow LFO to filter cutoff. Free-running, not tempo-synced, cycling every 8–20 seconds or so, at a shallow depth. You want the pad breathing in a way nobody could point to.
The evolving texture pad
Here's where the granular and spectral oscillators in Serum 2 justify themselves. Take a granular oscillator, feed it a long sustained source, and slowly modulate grain position, and you get a kind of motion no LFO on a wavetable can fake.
Send a second slow LFO to wavetable or grain position, a third to unison detune, and set all three to different rates so they never sync up. Random or drifting LFO shapes beat a plain sine for this. The modulation guide shows how those routings get dragged in and scaled.
The dark unsettled pad
Filter it hard, low-pass around 800 Hz–2 kHz, and pull two voices a few cents apart on purpose. The slow beating between them is where the tension lives. Under that, tuck a filtered noise oscillator at a level you feel rather than hear.
The bright air pad
High-pass at 500 Hz or higher so the patch lives only in the upper half of the mix. Long reverb, some chorus, and a filter that opens very slowly. It's the one layer that can sit over a vocal without fighting anything.

Tempo, groove and arrangement
Pads largely ignore tempo, and that's their job: they hold still while everything else moves. Attack and release should still make sense against the grid though. At 124 BPM, a 500 ms attack lands roughly on a sixteenth note and reads as deliberate. Play that same attack at 90 BPM and it just feels slow.
Move pad chords on the bar or every two bars, no faster. Make a pad chase a busy chord rhythm and it becomes a stab, and it stops doing what a pad does.
A trick I keep coming back to: leave the pad running for the whole track and automate the low-pass instead of muting. Shut in the intro, halfway open through the verse, wide open at the drop. The arrangement shifts without the listener ever hearing a part switch on.
Mixing notes for pads
Every pad gets a high-pass at 150 Hz minimum — 300 Hz once there's a bass part with any real presence. The bass owns the warmth. The pad owns the width.
Wide is good, but always check mono. Stack heavy unison with chorus and the sum can cancel almost to nothing, and the first place you'll notice is a club PA.
Take a wide cut around 250–500 Hz. Pads, vocals and guitars all stack up in that band.
Duck the pad 2–3 dB against the kick with a slow release. The track gains a pulse without turning into obvious pumping.
Balance the pad with the full mix running, then pull it down another 2 dB. If you can pick it out clearly, it's still too loud.
Common mistakes
Leaving the low end in. A high-pass at 200–300 Hz fixes more amateur mixes than any other single move I know.
Zero modulation. Without movement a pad is just a held chord, and it sounds cheap instantly. One slow LFO on cutoff is the bare minimum.
Drowning it in reverb. Long attacks and releases already push the sound into the distance; stacking a 6 second hall on top wipes out whatever definition the chord had.

No, they rely on the Serum 2 engine. Serum 2 is a free update if you own Serum 1.
Where should I high-pass a pad?
Use 150 Hz as the floor, 300 Hz when the mix is busy with a strong bass. Sweep the filter up until the pad goes thin, then ease back a touch.
My pad disappears when I check the mix in mono. Why?
That's phase cancellation from stacked unison detune and chorus. Drop unison to 3–4 voices, ease off the chorus depth, and widen only above 300 Hz with a frequency-limited stereo widener.
Are they really royalty-free?
Yes. Use them on releases, client work, beats you sell, no credit needed.
Can I use them in any DAW?
Any DAW that runs Serum 2: Ableton, FL Studio, Logic, Cubase, Studio One and the rest.
