The gap between a sketch and a record is often one good chord preset. And chord patches are odd beasts: they need enough size to carry a drop, yet enough cleanliness that six simultaneous notes don’t collapse into noise.
Here I’m pulling apart how chord sounds get made in Xfer Serum 2 — the voicing, the unison, the filtering, the FX that turn a stack of notes into one instrument — and there are 15 free presets attached, so you begin with professional patches rather than a blank init screen.
A warning up front: most chord problems are actually arrangement problems dressed up as synthesis. Both get covered below.

The sound, part by part
The wide supersaw stack
This is the festival chord. Saw oscillator, unison between 5 and 7, detune at 0.15 to 0.25, noticeably less than you’d run on a single-note lead, since six notes multiply the beating.
High-pass at 250–350 Hz inside the patch itself, not only on the channel. Follow with a gentle low-pass near 10 kHz to tame the fizz, then open the filter slowly over four to eight bars for the build. Why detune must drop as note count rises is explained in the supersaw guide.
The soft filtered house chord
Two saws, or a saw with a square. Unison 2 to 3, detune below 0.10. A 24 dB low-pass at 1.5–2.5 kHz with keytracking engaged. Give it a medium attack of 20–60 ms so each chord blooms in rather than hitting.
Finish with low-depth chorus and a 1/4 delay with barely any feedback. Congratulations: that one patch is most of classic house harmony.
The stab
Zero attack, 200–500 ms decay, zero sustain. Want bite? A resonant low-pass with a snappy filter envelope. Want thin and rhythmic? Swap to a band-pass. Play it on the offbeats and it pulls double duty as both harmony and percussion.
Voicing, which matters more than the patch
Never park four-note closed voicings down low. Root and fifth can sit below middle C at most, while thirds, sevenths and extensions get spread above it. Pull the third out of the bass register entirely and the mud vanishes before you’ve touched an EQ.
On synths, sus2, add9 and minor 11 voicings come across bigger than plain triads — the extra note gives the detune more surface to spread over.

Tempo, groove and arrangement
In most dance music at 120–128 BPM, chords change once per bar; in progressive and melodic techno, every two bars. Change faster and the track gets restless. Change slower and it turns hypnotic.
Just as important as which chord: where it lands. Push the change an eighth note early and the progression leans forward; let it land late and everything feels heavier. Test both before you go rewriting the chords themselves.
A habit that pays off: run the same progression two ways, long sustained pad-style chords in one pass and short stabs an octave up in the other, and automate between them through the arrangement. The listener hears two sections; you wrote zero new material.

Mixing notes for chords
High-pass at 250–350 Hz. No single element dumps more low-mid buildup into a mix than chords, and below that point they contribute almost nothing.
Take a wide 2–3 dB bell out of 300–500 Hz, the boxy zone where six detuned voices stack up.
Below 200 Hz, keep the stack mono. Wide chords carrying low content fall apart on a club system.
Sidechain against the kick, 3–4 dB with a medium release. Chords are the classic pumping element, and they tolerate deeper ducking than any lead.
When you need loudness, reach for saturation on the chord bus instead of the fader. A touch of drive welds the voices into a single instrument.
Common mistakes
Overdoing the detune. Huge on one note means out of tune on four. Moving a patch from lead duty to chord duty? Cut the detune in half.
Closed voicings down in the bass register. The single biggest source of muddy chords, and fixing it is free: shift notes up an octave.
Doubling the bass note inside the chord. The root belongs to the bass alone; start the chord from the third or fifth.

How do I make one note play a whole chord?
Three options: a chord-mode preset, Serum 2’s arpeggiator, or stacked MIDI in the DAW. The chord patches in this pack respond to single notes; move in thirds and you have an instant progression.
My chords sound muddy no matter how I EQ them. What now?
Because it’s the voicing, not the EQ. Push everything except root and fifth above middle C, take the third out of the low octave, halve the detune. Then EQ, not before.
Are they really royalty-free?
