Bass House rises or falls on its sound palette: growling low-end power: basses that talk, metallic stabs, drops with the impact of a truck. Structurally it’s house; the bassline, though, runs on dubstep sound design.
Designing Serum 2 packs is my day job, and in this genre the synth work literally is the song. Drums stay simple, arrangement stays standard, and the whole thing hangs on whether your bass moves enough to hold attention across sixteen bars.
What follows is a breakdown of the bass, the stabs and the leads, then tempo, mixing, and the mistakes that turn a bass house drop thin when it should be heavy.

The sound, part by part
The main bass
Two halves, always. Half one: a clean sine sub: mono, unprocessed, holding the root. Half two: a mid bass above it, high-passed at 100–150 Hz, carrying every bit of the character. Run them as separate voices or layers so each gets its own processing.
The growl lives in the mid bass. Choose a harmonically dense wavetable, unison at 3 or 4, detune around 10–15%, then get the wavetable position moving: an LFO locked to eighths or sixteenths, or a macro you ride through the drop.
After the distortion, insert a band-pass or comb filter and drive its cutoff from the same LFO. That combination is what makes the bass talk. There’s massive overlap with dubstep technique here; the growl guide walks the modulation routing in more depth, and all of it carries over.
Metallic stabs
Stabs should be short, bright and pitched. Take a hard, metallic wavetable, unison of 2, decay near 180 ms, sustain at zero. For the clang, bring in ring modulation or FM from a second oscillator.
Place them off the beat, opposite the bass. Bass lands on the downbeat, stab answers on the “and” — that back-and-forth is the actual hook in most bass house drops.
Leads and vocal chops
Most bass house leads are just the bass patch shifted up an octave, with the distortion eased off and more reverb poured on. Keeping the same wavetable holds the drop together sonically.
Need the sharper rave-style lead instead? A saw at unison 5, 25% detune, high-passed at 300 Hz slices through without piling weight onto the range the bass already owns.
Movement, generally
A static patch is a dead patch in this genre. Map wavetable position, filter cutoff and distortion drive onto three macros, then automate no fewer than two of them across each eight bars. New to macro and LFO routing? The modulation guide explains the drag-and-drop matrix.
Tempo, groove and arrangement
The genre sits at 126–130 BPM; 128 is the default answer.
Structure is textbook house: 16-bar intro, 16-bar build, 32-bar drop, breakdown, second drop. All the energy concentrates in the drop, and the build’s only job is making that first bass note feel larger than life.
An arrangement habit worth stealing: within the drop, swap the bass pattern every eight bars, not the sounds. Identical patch, new rhythm. The drop keeps evolving without the sound losing its identity.
Mixing notes for bass house
Mono under 150 Hz. That’s higher than most genres go, and for a reason: the mid bass carries stereo content that muddies fast if it reaches too low.
Sidechain the sub against the kick hard and quick, with release at 20–40 ms. The mid bass gets a far gentler sidechain, or none whatsoever.
Cut 300–600 Hz from the drums and hand that band to the mid bass. Perceived size in a bass house drop is won or lost right there.
Loudness is a clipping story. A soft clipper on the bass bus shaving 3–4 dB off the peaks ahead of the master is standard operating procedure in this genre, and it buys you far more than any limiter.
Keep an eye on CPU too. Big unison counts stacked with multiple distortion stages add up fast; the CPU notes break down what actually burns cycles.
Common mistakes
One bass doing both jobs. Sub and growl each need their own processing. Split them apart and the drop doubles in size.
Distortion before the filter, always. Flip it. A filter taming distortion sounds controlled; distortion hitting a filtered signal sounds harsh.
No sub under the growl. Character comes from the growl, weight comes from the sine. A drop that’s loud but somehow not heavy is a drop missing its sine.
Too much going on. In the drop: bass, drums, one stab. That’s the list. Anything more is fighting your low end.

Do these presets work in Serum 1?
No — they’re built on the Serum 2 engine. But Serum 2 is a free update for existing Serum owners, so a Serum 1 licence already gets you in.
Are the presets really royalty-free?
Yes. Releases, client jobs, beats you sell, no credit needed. The only thing off-limits is reselling the presets themselves.
Can I use them in any DAW?
Anywhere Serum 2 loads as VST3 or AU: Ableton, FL Studio, Logic, Cubase, Studio One, the lot. Serum 2 also runs natively on Apple Silicon.
What is the difference between bass house and future house?
Future house favors filtered, vocal-ish leads and a smoother overall mix. Bass house is grimier, more distorted, with bass design borrowed from dubstep. Same tempo territory, completely different attitude.
My bass sounds huge soloed but vanishes in the mix — what is wrong?
Nine times out of ten, the drums and stabs are masking 300–600 Hz. Solo the bass, find where its energy concentrates, then cut exactly that band from everything else during the drop. Still weak? Verify your sub layer is truly mono and isn’t being cancelled by some stereo effect.
