Back in 2023 we spent a weekend sampling a real Minimoog Model D and released the recordings as a free pack. Three years later it’s still one of the most downloaded things on our site. So I’ve updated this post for 2026 — same free sounds, plus a few new ways to use them that didn’t exist when I first wrote it.

Why Moog sounds still matter
Moog synthesizers have been shaping records since Robert Moog built his first modular systems in the 1960s. Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, Stevie Wonder, Parliament — the list of classic Moog users reads like a history of modern music.

What makes them special is mostly physics. The oscillators are analog circuits, so they drift slightly against each other — that tiny instability is the “warmth” everyone talks about. And the famous 24 dB/octave ladder filter saturates in a musical way when you push the resonance, which is why a Moog bass sits so heavy in a mix.
Modern soft synths get close to this. But sampling the real thing skips the guesswork: the drift, the filter character and the analog noise floor are already baked into the recording.
What’s inside the free pack
Every one-shot in the pack was recorded from a Minimoog Model D — three oscillators, ladder filter, no presets, every sound dialed in by hand. Here’s what you get:
- Bass one-shots — clean subs, growly reese-style tones and punchy mid-range basses, labeled by key.
- Lead one-shots — from soft and flute-like to aggressive detuned tones.
- Keys and plucks — shorter sounds that work well chopped or played chromatically.
- FX — self-oscillating filter sweeps, pitch dives and other happy accidents.
Everything is royalty-free WAV, named so you can find things fast. Here’s one of the bass shots so you know what you’re getting:
A one-shot is just a single recorded note. Drop it into any sampler — Ableton’s Simpler, the FL Studio channel sampler, Kontakt, whatever — and you can play it chromatically like a synth. That’s what makes one-shots more flexible than loops: you write your own part.
Moog synths worth knowing in 2026
The lineup has changed a lot since I first wrote this post — Moog was acquired by inMusic in 2023, and a few classics have been retired. Here’s the current short list:
- Minimoog Model D — the reissued original. Three oscillators, ladder filter, monophonic. This is the synth our free pack was sampled from.
- Matriarch — semi-modular, 4-note paraphonic, with stereo analog delay. Great for evolving patches and patching accidents that turn into songs.
- Subsequent 37 — the successor to the Sub 37. A workhorse mono synth for basses and leads.
- Grandmother — semi-modular with a real spring reverb tank. The most fun per dollar in the current range, in my opinion.
- Muse — the 8-voice polyphonic flagship released in 2024, with two oscillators per voice plus a dedicated modulation oscillator.
Do you need any of these to make records? No. That’s kind of the point of this pack: you get the analog sound without the analog price tag.
Five ways to use Moog one-shots in your tracks
These recordings are deliberately dry and unprocessed, so they take shaping well. Here’s what works for me:
- Layer for width and weight. Put a clean Moog sub under a brighter top layer. High-pass the top layer around 150–200 Hz so the two don’t fight, and keep everything below 100 Hz mono.
- Push them through effects. Try a dotted-eighth delay at 20–30% wet on leads, or hit a bass shot with soft saturation before compression. A ladder-style filter plugin brings back the movement of the original hardware — sweep the cutoff with a slow LFO and it stops sounding like a static sample.
- Repitch and repurpose. A bass one-shot pitched up an octave becomes a thick lead. A lead pitched down 12 semitones and stretched becomes a texture. In a sampler this is a ten-second experiment, so try the “wrong” use first.
- Blend with acoustic elements. Moog bass under a piano or guitar is a classic combination — the analog low end fills the space acoustic instruments leave empty.
- Feed them into Serum 2. This one wasn’t possible when I first published this post. Since the March 2025 update (a free upgrade for Serum 1 owners), Serum has three oscillators and several engine types, including granular and spectral. Drag any Moog one-shot into the Sample or Granular oscillator and a static recording becomes a playable, modulatable patch. One warning: don’t build a whole track out of one-shots alone. They’re an ingredient. Combine them with your own drums, melodies and sound design so the result sounds like you, not like a sample pack.

FAQ: free Moog samples
Are these Moog samples really royalty-free?
Yes. Use them in commercial releases, beats you sell, sync work — no credit needed. The only thing you can’t do is resell the samples themselves as a pack.
What do I need to play the one-shots?
Any sampler, and every major DAW ships with one: Simpler or Sampler in Ableton Live, the channel sampler in FL Studio, Quick Sampler in Logic. Drop the WAV in and the sample maps across your keyboard automatically.
Can I use these samples in Serum 2?
Yes, and it’s my favorite way to use them. Serum 2’s Sample and Granular engines accept any WAV — drag a one-shot in, add filter movement and effects, and save it as a preset. The granular tutorial linked above walks through it step by step.
Do sampled Moog sounds lose anything compared to the hardware?
For single notes, not really — a clean recording captures exactly what the synth did in that moment. What you lose is real-time control: filter rides, live tweaking, drift over long notes. Resampling and modulating the shots in your DAW or in Serum 2 gets you most of that back.
